Im just curious...does NBC ever use their studio downtown? Everytime I walk by there is never any action going on inside.

Yeah. Mike Jackson does the Noon News there on weekdays. Everyone else stays up in their larger studio on Olentangy River Rd.

They used it in the beginning... but I am guessing it was just too distracting. Or maybe they had too many folks abusing the live TV situation.
ETA - It was actually used for the morning broadcast, and I saw some Saturday morning stuff shot from there as well, which means two anchors at the desk. Weather could have been done remotely, I guess, but that just seems odd.

I remember seeing a blog post by one of the reporters (not Mike Jackson) that it feels pretty lonely when you're there, because it's set up to accomodate just a single reporter. The camera is operated remotely from the Olentangy location. I imagine that's why they don't use it that much.

Media General, the company that owns WCMH is a conglomerate that owns newspapers and TV stations across the country.
They have been losing money for quite sometime and are laying off people left and right. Hard to staff a studio with nobody available.
Ironic the biggest news story in the state in many years at your doorstep and nobody at the studio.

Think its pobbile that NBC will rethink renewing their lease at Broad & High? That would be a shame!

It's looking like 10TV is taking over the NBC4 signs but not the studio. This is CONFUSING.

^ That is just weird.

Why is that weird? It just tells me the ad space has value, the studio does not.

The studio did seem to be an afterthought for NBC4 and they used it as little as possible. It is likely that the two stations were both vying for a presence at Broad and High and NBC said they would lease the space as well as signage. To me, 10tv seems to be a more logical choice for downtown anyway. Wonder what is going in between Tim Horton's and Cafe Lola?

NBC4 entered into the Broad & High development agreement while they were still owned and operated by the network and under direct management of a savvy, creative GM with good local business relationships. Media General bought them from NBC in the summer of 2006, just as the B&H progress was far enough along that NBC4 couldn't extract itself from the commitment.
The NBC4 GM who set up the deal in the first place is long gone (off to L.A. as the GM at the NBC O&O out there, so it's not like he didn't understand how to run a TV station), and Media General had no interest in developing what they saw as a white elephant.

I heard when Oprah retires she is taking over that studio to start a new show titled "Oprah and Zex". Kind of like a Regis and Kelly with Damon Zex has her side kick.

Wow, I also thought WBNS should be located on the corner of Broad & High. They just fit there. I dont like NBC4. They seem to... boring.

I am not boring!

Agreed about NBC4 being boring.
Plus, they continue to employ Mindy Drayer, which is as indicative of NBC4's judgment as a would-be journalistic outlet as anything.

Not sure if it was ever officially declared dead, but I think it definitely can be now. There's a for lease sign up in the former studio window for retail. Not sure exactly how that would be configured, given that the space is so small and narrow, and also is currently only accessible through the High St lobby. Also not sure how desirable it is given that several of the other spaces in the development have never had tenants.
It's a shame that channel 4 couldn't make it work, or that 10tv apparently wasn't interested in taking over the space. Was an interesting, if ultimately failed, experiment.
eta: Don't mind the video screens, but I still that those tacky and spinning signs on top of the building (Kroger, Nationwide, etc.) should get the heave-ho.
Any income from advertising is surely not worth making Columbus' main corner look like a piece of poop.

Huh - I actually saw the 10TV sign going up this morning?

It was my impression they would be taking over the exterior signage and news ticker from Channel 4, but that they had passed on the actual studio space itself. I saw a lease sign in the space on Wednesday, so I assume it's still the case. I would be very happy if Channel 10 actually did take over the studio, but I don't think it's happening...
This isn’t 10TV’s first brush with a place at Broad and High. Griesdorn said the station talked with Casto about becoming a tenant before WCMH signed on, but the street-level space wasn’t – and still isn’t – of interest.
“It’s not something we felt would work to our advantage when offered the opportunity years ago, and nothing’s changed,” he said. “We don’t see the value of that particular line of sight.”http://www.bizjournals.com/columbus/news/2011/04/25/wcmh-out-of-broad-high-studios.html?page=all
