More jobs sent to India while their execs rake in outrageous bonuses.
The execs of large companies are ruining our country and no one will do anything about it. They write their own checks, eliminate thousands of American jobs, don't care about their customers and get away with it.
We need a corporate America tea party where we boycott the white collar crime in this country. I understand we are a "capitalistic" society. However, this is getting ridiculous. Our leadership needs to penalize companies that continually send jobs overseas just so execs can keep their sickening bonuses.

Nothing in the article about the jobs going to India nor about the elimination leading to executive bonuses, if you have info, please link to the source.

Sorry, I made a an assumption based on recent happenings regarding outsourcing at Nationwide. I have friends that work there and they're being told jobs are going to India. I'm not saying the executives got bonuses because of these exact eliminations. My point is that corporate America is still out of control and something needs to be done about it. Aren't either of you concerned about the increasing outsourcing of American jobs and the lack of oversight on corporate executives?

No, I personally am not. if I am a shareholder in a company i want the leadership of that company to do what it can to maximize shareholder value. If that includes outsourcing jobs overseas because the same job can be done cheaper in India, so be it. Americans have to learn that they are now competing on a global level. were you pissed at Honda outsourcing jobs to Marysville, instead of building cars in Japan, and then shipping them over at a higher cost, thus making the cost of the veichle higher?
As large as nationwide is, the fact that the execs make a few million a year does not bother me.

I'm very concerned about it, especially since my job is vulnerable to outsourcing.
But working in a large company, restructurings and small reductions in force are a common occurrence. It sucks to be affected (I've been before), but not all cuts are related to exporting jobs or executive bonuses. Unfortunately, sometimes your job is making buggy whips in an automobile world.

I've heard a lot about layoffs and outsourcing at NW lately and it struck a nerve with me today.
I am very disillusioned with corporate America. I don't have a problem with executives making millions in salary every year. They work hard for it. What I do have a problem with is how companies keep sending good jobs overseas. These aren't just manufacturing jobs. They're professional jobs that people have worked hard to get. How many IT professionals in the US are unemployed because their job was outsourced to meet "numbers." These workers aren't "outdated" in their skills. The executives make these decisions so that their companies are attractive to investors and they can maintain their salaries and bonuses. Americans shouldn't be penalized because the standard of living in the US is higher than that of developing countries.
I'm saying it is time for Americans to stand up and say "enough is enough" and boycott companies that keep killing American jobs.

NW's last CEO (Jurgensen)left with stocks worth about $23 million plus accumulated pay and benefits. Not bad for 9 years work. How much $$ is the Arena bleeding?

You know, a lot of times I think some of the figureheads on the right throw around the word "socialism" too freely. This wouldn't be one of those times, at least when you're talking about things like oversight.
Now, you want to vote with your wallet and with your IRA or 401k, go for it...that's the American Way. Otherwise, unless you're talking about companies that are subsidized by taxpayer dollars, I don't really want the government involved in things like executive compensation or hiring.

I've been bit by the "build or buy" choice.
Early in my tech writing career, the norm was to hire a permanent employee to have on hand. Another example would be a software developer or a network administrator (or a team of them), people who know the company and are committed to it. Whether software or documentation about it, everything was produced and managed in-house.
Now comes lean times etc., and it becomes more attractive to get rid of all these people and just bring in the ones you need, when you need them, in the form of consultant teams. Instead of writing your software, buy it off the shelf. Instead of a big computer humming in an expensive special room, put your data "in the cloud" on a battery of servers (aka Active Directory).
OK then if the work has moved to consultant teams, then be a consultant, right? I've gone that route. Let's ignore the idle time you may spend between assignments, and just assume you're working a good gig. You don't know how long it will last. You are entirely dispensible.
No exaggeration, I call it being bluebagged. That's my old workstation in the background.

The client you're working at is paying for your services, at double or triple (or more) of what the consulting house pays you. In other words, there's now a middleman between you and what would have been your salary. You may or may not have benefits, deals vary. There is no severance package, there's just the end of a need for you.
It's not entirely bleak, sometimes the consulting house will give you some SWAG like a coffee mug or duffle bag to show their appreciation.

It sucks when places do this. I know all about it as I have seen it firsthand. I have seen it in my work place and seen it when I try to get some information about my mortgage. It’s been this way for years. I would hate to see the government meddle anymore than they all ready do. I would not like the idea of them telling people what they can and cannot do with their business. Sometimes I think people forget that we are a capitalistic society . What are the choices would anyone honestly think that more intrusion by the government would be a good thing?

Consulting is tough work.
I have a skill set that companies need, when they need it.
I move data centers. So how often are they going to move their data center? 90% of the time they don't need this skill set.So I get brought on, do it and leave.

Frankly, it's inevitable that most businesses don't, or shouldn't, have a need for inhouse software shops (unfortunately including tehcnical writers). Inhouse development, when not a core business function, almost certainly costs vastly more than custom-tweaked off- the-shelf software. And for most of the user community, it's what they need, even though it may not be what they want.
