Is anyone on the board participating in National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo)? (For those who don't know, it's an annual contest, held November 1-30. The goal is to write a 50 thousand-word novel in 30 days. For more information, go to http://www.nanowrimo.org)
Does anyone know where there are meetings in Columbus, in the city itself? Both my daughter and I are participating.

Yes, we do have quite an active group in Columbus. The regional forum is here: http://www.nanowrimo.org/en/regions/usa-ohio-columbus#regional_forum
and there is a link to the Google calendar with official events. In the forum itself you'll find information about smaller events in various parts of Columbus.
And while you're on the NaNoWriMo site, be sure to set your region to Columbus - that way you'll receive email notifications, event announcements, etc. from us (I'm one of the municipal liaisons.)

The expert on that was the late Lauran Paine, who is probably the most prolific writer in American literature. Beginning in the 1920s, and continuing until he died (circa 2003), he averaged two book-length manuscripts a week. They were mostly Westerns, bodice-rippers, and science fiction, and of questionable literary merit, but he had written close to 1000 published books at the time of his death. (There was a 1985 People article that said, "Lauran Paine rewrites the record books every time he sits down at the typewriter."

I sympathize! I had to go out of town Saturday, and wrote nothing that day. Last night I fell short of the daily quota, so I'm going to have to double up my word count to get back to normal.
How's this for a slogan: NaNoWriMo--The literate person's alternative to college football.

One way is to extend words any way you can. Why have a character go to Harvard when he/she can go to Johns Hopkins University? That's three words right there. Or why come from Columbus when they can come from New Port Richey? These tricks are legion.
