California High School Bans Cheerleaders From Wearing Uniforms to Class

This is not how Dems are going to capture the youth vote...

Imagine if high school cheerleaders had never sauntered around campus in short skirts, but rather walked down the hall in swishy sweatpants.

Would we be without one of the most commonly used archetypes for the popular/mean girl in greater film and television history? Can a cheerleader still be a queen bee, calling out lesser girls' sartorial choices, when she herself is suffering from a major case of saggy-butt?

We kid, of course, but it's worth thinking about what teenage life may have been like had these iconic skirts never invaded high school campuses. Piedmont Hills High school in San Jose, Calif. is about to find out. School administrators are extending their crackdown of the dress code policy to the cheerleading squad's uniforms—tailored and custom-made $300 uniforms that members were told to buy by the school itself.

I don't understand how you attribute this to Democrats? This article screams Bachman esque conservative overreach. Republicans are all for freedom unless people want to do something liberal, then they are all for censorship and control. The same reason you can't say fuck on TV.

In school they told us that skirts and shorts must be no shorter than your finger tips.
I think that was pretty standard for most schools.
On that note cheerleading outfits are way shorter than that it’s about 2 inches from exposing butt cheek. Good thing they have those dark underwear that go with the uniform.

You don't think they will spin this on Teacher's unions (or have you not been paying attention) and Cheerleader uniforms as somehow indicative of Founding Father Americana? No one said they had to be consistent.

Yes. There used to be dress code when I was in school, but I distinctly remember it being primarily a middle school code, not so much in high school (and this was in the 80s).

If the "they" is the Fox News/Rightwing echo chamber, I doubt they'll be up in arms about covered butt cheeks. Unless one of those butt cheeks had a miracle image of Jesus on it and this was a conspiracy to keep God out of schools.

I hardly think a high school dress code represents any sweeping generalization about the national political landscape.

On the other hand, it's a classic example of the new puritanism. Not a political movement per-se, but it may be a partial driver of some political motivation.

Some people just need to chill.

Seems to me that someone gets a little too turned on by cheerleader legs.

It does (as the article points out) seem like a strange thing to be fussy about. Schools have bigger fish to fry.

I remember when girls were not allowed to wear pants to school. Dresses/skirts only. That changed when I was in 5th grade. I was also the very first girl in my school district to take "shop". It was a big deal at the time. I refused to take Home Eck. I guess the conservos have come full circle on dress codes.

I think the swim team should be able to go to class in their bathing suits too.

If the cheerleaders are simply going to class like everyone else, why should they wear their uniforms? The football team doesn't walk around in cleats and pads...

Learning to evaluate your environment, and dress appropriately for the work that you are doing isn't a bad lesson to learn in high school. I had a friend in grad school who thought platform boots were an appropriate footwear to go measure buildings in a agricultural field. Our advisor literally made her go back to her apartment and change.

@Hey - If the student is going to school and getting their work done, exactly where is the problem with the uniform? I realize this one case is about cheerleading uniforms, but this dress battle raged back in the 80s (and I imagine before) over things like board shorts, skirts, etc. Clothing being one of the first areas where a kid can express themselves to the world, on that subject I've been pretty libertarian since like 6th grade.

There's also an important difference between effective dress and appropriate dress. Appropriateness does not by default also confer effectiveness. Your friend was dressed ineffectively for performing her job, but my corporation insisted for years on a standard of staff dress that had no bearing on their effectiveness. You can put a lazy employee in a suit, they're still going to be a lazy employee. In dealing with co-workers, I'd rather have them not burdened w/ needless dress expectations, but instead just be competent at doing their jobs.

LOL I've seen that kind of thing happen more than a couple of times on field trips.

The high school I attended wasn't really big into sports so cheerleaders wearing their was never an issue. However, I can see why some schools would want to discourage this. I don't see wearing your uniform as an issue of self expression in the same way wearing a band t-shirt is.
I might be over thinking this, but it seems to me allowing cheerleaders to wear uniforms to class creates an artificial social divide among students that isn't necessary and in this day and age where bullying seems to be a big deal kids don't need further reminders that they aren't part of the in crowd.

Sure there are going to be some folks that are effective at their jobs no matter how they are dressed, and some that are ineffective no matter how they are dressed. But I believe the vast majority of people are influenced by appearance and dress, and more importantly, the vast majority of jobs do have some sort of dress code, whether written or unwritten.

But regardless of how casual a workplace you have, I suspect you don't come to work dressed like you were going to workout (unless you are a personal trainer...) :) These girls aren't leading cheers in Calculus class... why the heck should they be dressed as if they were about to break out into B-E A-G-R-E-S-S-I-V-E? None of the other sports teams wear their uniforms in class. What makes cheerleaders different?

Oh right, they are cute 17 year old girls with tight butts hanging out of tiny little skirts. Cause when I think... let's make a stand for personal freedom, I definitely want that platform to be built on the right of very young women to wear inappropriately short skirts at any time.
