So as many of you know the Washington Beach/Bluffs/So-Hud/Awesometwon stretch of N. High St between Lane Ave and Arcadia Ave has been under construction since spring. The past month of construction have made the roadway very dangerous and totally un-fit for cycling. The pavement is in ruins with too many surface changes to count, divots, holes, hardened cement spills, and steel plates galore. I have had to stop twice now to alert the site foremen and police that the plates were coming apart with gaps between them that would surely wreck or trap a bicycle or motocycle.
I don't even travel through there anymore because the conditions have got so bad, and I have ridden from Columbus to Seattle before.
Finding alternates is easy and no deal right now, The bike path, Neil, East Ave, Adams, and Indianola are all just a block or more away and only add another minute or two to the travel time. Adaption is a good.
My big concern is,and I hope city hall reads this, is what happens come winter? High St is the only street that is safe to ride on when everything else is iced over and snowed in. The bike path is pretty useless in the winter and certainly right after a snow (does it even get plowed?), even Neil and Indianola are not the best bets with ice, and East ave and Adams are out of the question. Will this construction work end by December? If not, then will cycling become a pretty difficult and hazardous task just to go from OSU to Southern Clintonville and points in between? Does the city think about stuff like this when doing and planning projects?
Just some thoughts. And be careful through there if your in a stroller or a monster truck...
