My wishlist for Columbus

Been thinking about some items which potentially could add some sparkle to Columbus and enhance the quality of life for downtown. ( hint hint Mayor Coleman)
Airport impression - how do you feel when you walk through CMH airport - does it leave a good taste in travellers mouths? How does our airport stack up to some of the better rated airports, not just in the US, but around the world - I think we can make a better impression.
More Bike lockers around the city please - encourages use if there are there... and make them look good too - we like innovative design!
I know the street car idea is brewing, but have other cities light rail options been reviewed and not just the US - what about Barcelona's tram system? Or Rome's cute little electric bus? light rail between wortington/arlington/grove city/westerville would be fabulous and reduce car traffic (less accidents, free up some congestion?) East side of Cleveland has light rail between suburbs and downtown....
Outdoor cinema downtown - in the summer - like in Greece - make it free, invite classy vendors!
well designed affordable apartments - not everyone can buy a $250K condo, your creative young professionals need a place to live.
Great urban landscaping - take a look at what Richard Daly did for Chicagos streetscapes, hell -Easton looks great year round!
Elegant street clocks - like in Vienna, Belgium, or Prague
Green space
free wi-fi in 43215
outdoor swimming complex
create pockets of destination shopping - need to provide the incentives for the retailers to come, then the people will come.
police boxes - people at any time - should feel safe and know protection is a short distance away.
temporary markets - what about a Christmas Market? Farmers Market on the Capitol square - sponsor an architecture competition to design an appealing structure which could be used year round - Brooklyn has a Saturday art and flea market with great craftsmen and their wares.
great unique outdoor seating - and plenty of it!
start up business incubators
incentives for small business - more deli's, specialty grocers, wine shops, bakeries, clothing stores - i'm sure there are budding CCAD students who would love to open up shop - lets encourage them and help them get their start!

A lot of your ideas could be best implemented by tapping the talent at the University.
The University needs to get more in touch with the city and visa versa.

Why do you need to wait for government to do some of these things?
There are spaces where you could arrange a market.
No one is stopping you or another enterprising person from starting a bike rental business or bike lockers.
Local business are free to do many of the things you wish for. Maybe they just need an encouragement and someone to do the legwork (running a small business is enough time).
Most good things are a result of someone out there pounding the pavement and taking responsibility, not posting wishlists and waiting for a (very strapped and downsizing) government to do something.
Pick one idea. Say a community clock project (which sounds really cool). Find out what it would take to install them like street lights and/or what code is required if they are mounted on buildings. Figure a way to finance them via sponsorships, microdonations, etc. Survey locations and contact property owners. Then take a proposal to council with all the details mapped out. I bet it could happen.

City of Columbus just launched a bike share program for employees, OSU has one at the RPAC for students and I think faculty/staff and Handy Bikes rents during the bike season. So we have a good start, just need the expansion.

I suggested this to have OSU students do projects to benefit the city since they have SO much funding. It would be a win win. I even made the same suggestion to my company to utilize the new talent and other resources at OSU for retail development (do a store from the ground up as senior project, run, operate the store for the grade etc.)

Did you know that funding for higher education is intended for ....... education?
And OSU does not have "SO" much funding. They have been cutting programs, positions and fighting hard to prevent tuition from going up too much as the general revenue fund shrinks.
I kindly request that all posters who want everything to come from sugardaddies to please make such requests in a suitable Southern Belle accent. Thank for you for understanding.

I am not trying to be mean, but I am really, really tired of the continual we-need-an-X in Columbus and wouldn't-it-be-great (not limited to Enzo) followed by butt-sitting.
A few people tossed around a little bon-mot about Indie Arts Capital. Had Coremodels and Mike Reed and many others just blabbed and sat, NOTHING would have happened.
Not to lionize myself at all, but a while back I had the nebuluous idea of promoting Ohio wines. With a big measure of Bear meat, I made something happen. I didn't make a Facebook page or post here or anything like that. I planned, I worked, I made calls and emails - persistently. I lined up support. In a month, we got a dual-location Ohio-Michigan Wine Clash going. We got press (want more). We got an internationally-known wine writer excited. We laid the groundwork for more and better next year. And I am working on springboarding what I learned and contacts I made into other projects.
I don't care what it is - just do something.

How about one million more people? That would transform Columbus and put the region into a much bigger size bracket and help achieve the scale needed to support many of these amenities.
