Our house was broken into yesterday while we were at work. So far it's an experience that has been met with both frustration and comfort. The police officers have been great. Our block watch has identified the kids. On the frustrating end, one neighbor watched two kids wheeling a 46 inch flat screen down the alley in a trash can and didn't call the cops and these kids apparently have a reputation in the neighborhood for "this kind of thing." How many felonies does it take to get a 13 year old out of your neighborhood?
I don't really care about the stuff. It's sounding like my home owners isn't going to pay for things that were taken because I don't have receipts for them, even though it's all itemized with values on our policy. I don't really see the point of having a policy, as Visa would pay for this stuff if I had the receipts.
What bothers me about it, is my wife works from home and a couple of 13 year old kids have the power to make her feel unsafe in her home now. I'll post pictures of the door they broke in through and any updates as I get them.

I wonder if in lieu of receipts, I should take pics? Thanks for mentioning this, I've never heard of people having trouble getting their items replaced after a break-in before, but I'm going to review my policy tonight just to make sure.

Well, not yet. The detective for the case is off today and I made it clear I was going over there when I got off of work so they told me to make sure I call first so they can send a police escort. The TV was heavy, they are too young to drive, and pushed the garbage can in the opposite direction from their house. So, they either have someone on the block perpendicular to us who is housing the stuff, or had someone meet them at the mouth of the alley for a pick-up. It is looking like it's not at their house, but we'll see what I find out this evening.

Just wondering .... do you live in Italian Village? Also, did they catch the kids?
Posted 2 years ago # -
Well I just got off the phone with my agent who said she is attempting to take care of this for me and that it's just because it's a "big ticket item." It was the claims adjuster that told me the thing about the receipts. I'll keep you up to date on that too.

Real sorry to hear the whole story though, I know it kind of messes with your head.

BTW, the reason I ask is I have a friend who lives in Italian Village who just had his house broken into. The cops knew said they knew who did it, but still have not arrested them yet. Very frustrating.

TT isn't in Italian Village.

Well duh, we don't pay insurance for the little ticket items!!
Posted 2 years ago # -
Not uncommon, most homeowner's policies have a cap on per item value (in fine print) and you have to take out specific addendums for items over 1k, 2k, 5k, whatever depending on the policy.

When my place was broken into a few years ago, they took two computers, tv, dvd player and some jewelry. At first I was told I needed receipts, but they ended up cutting me a check without them. I don't know if it has anything to do with the fact that I use a small town insurance agent that my mom has used for the past 30 years or not, but I do know that had I not had a separate small rider policy for the jewelry it wouldn't be covered at all. Perhaps most people know that, but I didn't.
And stupidly enough, I still don't keep reciepts for anything.Posted 2 years ago # -
Good luck getting your stuff back. Hopefully this will be the one that puts those two away for a while.

Ooooh, OK. I think I remember my rep asking me what the most expensive item in my house was and at the time I was thinking WTF is this guy casing me over the phone, haha but maybe that's why. I'm not so much worried about break-ins, but I'm assuming the same rules apply for any claim.

Oh yeah, and that whole thing about the State Farm agent showing up with a cup of coffee and a blanket in the middle of the night doesn't happen.

LOL! Yeah, I feel for you on that one TT, and feel for you on the whole breakin thing, I wasn't trying to sound defensive of the insurance industry or cold to your situation, just trying to throw out some info.
I feel bad for ya man, really do.
DISCLAIMER: This is not to in any way suggest to you it was your fault, it is simply a question for future issues.
Did you have an alarm? Was it armed? What did it consist of?

Sorry to hear about your troubles TT. :(
Most of the time the insurance company will cut you a check for it especially if you have the items listed on the policy. One thing people should remember is to take pictures of the big stuff so you have photo proof in a situation like this. Also to add get a hold of the police department they have black light responsive markers for people to write their names and stuff of the back of big things like T.V.’s. That way if they find some items they will know who to get it back to.
If they caught the kids good. That is way more then to be expected I think that will make the process a little easier.Posted 2 years ago # -
Sorry to hear that. Do these "kids" have parents? Perhaps you could light their house on fire and shoot them whilst they're running out of the house? Seems a little harsh I know, but effective.

Oh I wasn't thinking that at all, Core. And no alarm as of yesterday afternoon, but alarm as of this afternoon. And anything else I need to get to make my wife feel comfortable. Assuming I get the receipt thing figured out I am only out my deductible. I will probably end up with a more secure door out of it, and have learned a couple of lessons and had the fact that I need to cut down that spruce that completely blocks my side porch from view reinforced.

kind of a total tangent on Snarf here, but this is ONE of the best arguments for a position I don't agree with, which is opposition to handguns in the house.
Had you had one, you'd probably now have a couple 13 year old morons running around with a 9MM.
