Used to be the St. James Tavern and now it's the Treehouse- lots of fun with tons of friends. Both have a great vibe, friendly servers, great music and they are very nicely priced for your drinking pleasure.

*highly opinionated rant ahead - your mileage may vary*
I've only been once and it rubbed me the wrong way very quickly. I walked in with some friends and when they were ordering, I was thinking about what I was in the mood for. The bartender smirked at me and said "first time in a bar? Hurry it up kid." I'm 23 years old (not to mention we were the only people in there). Really?
I highly doubt I'll go back.

Really?Lol, the bartender was joking. first of all, a beard does not make you old, neither does 23. Most seasoned drunkards know what their drink is, or at least have a quick fallback to drink while they think about what they want. You shouldn't take offense to what the bartender said, it was tongue in cheek.

No kidding, you've only been in bars legally for 2 years, look around you & check out the age of everyone else. You were a kid in a bar who didn't know what he wanted & the bartender just acknowledged the truth. No biggie.
I had a similar experience my first time in Brewstirs, just up the road. I decided I wanted to broaden my horizons and order a martini, something I had never really done before.
I just said "I'll take a martini" and the bartender just looked at me and said "is that all you got?"
I wasn't sure what was going on so i replied "uh…yeah".
She declared "if you don't know how to order a martini, you aren't allowed to have one, and I'm sure as hell not gonna make you one", and slid me a PBR.It was actually pretty funny and you have to put yourselves in the shoes of the bartender, standing on the other side of the bar, serving thousands of drunks sometimes for decades.

If you're in the 'burbs, I recommend the Dublin Village Tavern. Comfy, no-nonsense pub without any of the Disneyfied Irish tchotchkes you'd find at Brazenhead.

Nice and casual, decent pub grub. 6711 Dublin Center Drive, Dublin 799-2661

Hell, I had a full beard at 15. Didn't make me look older. Did make me look dumber.
Personally, I like a sassy bartender.

The Short North Tavern, the St. James, High Beck and O'Reilly's. All for basically the same reasons: they're comfortable places where I can hang out without pretense. And after all this time, all these places know me. It's like drinking at home, but you're not alone.
Speaking of the 'burbs, can we start a thread about bars in the 'burbs that are not cookie-cutter strip mall affairs? I think I will...

The St. James Tavern was the first bar I went to in Columbus. The Mister and I were just dating at the time, and I came with him to help in his apartment search because he was relocating from Chicago. I loved everything about it. The jukebox, the atmosphere, the friendly bartenders, and their "no crap on tap" beer policy. Everytime I came to visit, the STJ was where we'd always go for a good beer and a good time. After I moved here, it's where he takes me for cheering up, where we go for drunken pool, where we can escape the madness of Gallery Hop, and where we can listen to our favorite bands on the jukebox.
It's also where he first said he wanted to marry me. So it's got a very sentimental place in my heart.

No need to be so defensive of the place. I had a bad experience, doesn't mean that everyone will - I'm sure regulars have a great time, and that's what's so good about this city. Plenty of choices to make "regular". To each their own and all that jazz. Sheesh. Though, blammo, that's a hilarious story!

I wasn't defending the place, I've never been there. I was defending bartenders in general and trying to give you some tips on what is expected. Your 'bad experience' is really a non-experience.
Hell, I'd love to be 23 again, savor it!Posted 2 years ago # -
I love O'Reilley's and was astounded by their burgers when I first tried them. Luckily this little hole-in-the-wall is less than a five minute's walk from my house.

Not sure if it qualifies as pub? I've become a huge fan of Johnny's Tavern over the last couple years. Like to watch sports there, eat a burger, and drink several frosty mugs o' brew. Definitely a hole in the wall...but I like that.

… Though, blammo, that's a hilarious story! And it happened when I was 32 years old! I felt like I tried to sneak up to the "adult" table at thanksgiving and was sent packing back to the kid's table, with my turkey all cut up for me into little bite-sized pieces.

SJT FTW.
Hands Down.
No doubt at all.
Especially and mostly on nights when Ms. H is tending the bar.Posted 2 years ago # -

LOL.
I spend part of my job bartending and I do get some of the most ridiculous orders:
* Chocolate martini, but they don't want it to taste 'chocolate-y.'
* They had something somewhere that was yellow and tasted like a Hawaiian Punch. Do we have that?
* Tequila sunrise, but with rum.
* Do we have any drinks that light on fire?
* Can we do pitchers of martinis?Posted 2 years ago # -

Can we do pitchers of martinis?hey, it was worth asking.
If the answer to this ever becomes "why yes we do" please call me personally.
If you could also make bourbon come out of my bathroom faucet, that would be great too. What if it's just the color of bourbon?
