So I sit here, in my office, overlooking the Ohio State campus and the football stadium, wondering....... how did I get here?...
....
So I find myself living in a vintage house
And I find myself in a cornfield in the Midwest
And I find myself looking down upon the Ohio State stadium
And you may find myself in a college town, in a small town city
And you may ask yourself - well...how did I get here?
Letting the days go by/wishing them to pass quickly
Letting the days go by/this weather makes me sickly
Into the corn again/I need some culture quickly
Seems like a lifetime/Could this town be more hickly?
And I may ask myself
Why do I work at AEP?
And I may ask myself
Where did I park my grey SUV
And I may tell myself
This is not my football team!

This is not my Chicago town!

I don't like when I feel like that. I hate when I'm all bitchy about stuff and hating where I'm at. I've been down on Columbus, that's come and gone over the years. but it's not so much I don't like Columbus, but I miss the old Columbus when I get nostalgic about the way it used to be.

Actully it's been a pretty easy road.
I have one of these flying from my home every Saturday.
The house divided is actually kinda funny. Don't tell anyone on the board but I go to OSU at night in the school of achitecture.
The neighbors could not be nicer about it and even talked up the Michigan Wisconsin game. We all agree that deep deep down OSU fans want Michigan to do well so its a good game November 22nd. (and they can celebrate by trouncing us)
I mean, how fun would it be to beat a team that is 1-9 ?

If you think you're the only person in this city that ended up here and is homesick you're nuts. Some of us have just learned to make the best of a situation we may not have ever imagined for ourselves. If you stop being so negative and give this city a chance you might find yourself enjoying it a lot more. There's no time like the present to stop being a poopy pants about the place you live and a place (most of us, native or not) love.

Well, sitting around in front of your computer writing lame parody songs and ignoring the shows, bars, taverns, restaurants, meet ups, clubs hops, booze ups, parties, lectures, plays, book signings, and whatever else was going on while you were doing it is not going to help you much.
while you were writing that, the wife and I went to see a play (actually a series of short plays) It was a lot of fun. We considered going to see the new Barrel 44 bar that just opened, but decided we needed sleep after a full evening out.
By the way... I've seen what passes for "culture" in Chi-town (that's where you're from, right?) and frankly it's just more of the exact same stuff we have here but in a bigger and more run down gone to seed industrial meat packing town. Same shit, different setting. DUH BEARS DUH BULLS... Not worth romanticizing.
Please stop whining or just go back where you came from.

When I went to Tampa I'd search for a decent steak
When I moved to Chicago I would sit on the beach and lament the loss of my hobie-cat and sailing with the dolphins.
When I lived in Tokyo I would visit McDonalds twice a month and eat lousy meat.
In Florence I would sit outside and have a coke.
It takes a while to acclimate to any change. And loving the city I'm in means missing it when I move. If you can change your loves that fast you are either more adaptable or more fickle than me.
In the mean time, call me Mr. Poopy Pants and I'll vent if I wanna (you can always put me on ignore.)
I appreciate the suggestions and got back from some cool places this morning. But don't expect me to change because someone says; "Columbus Rocks!" without leaving the corn field.

A ton of us are relatively new to Columbus. It took me a couple of years to not miss Philly. I don't now. Because this city is beginning a huge growth and revitalization period, I feel a sense of responsibility to make the most of my time here. Columbus is so much more than just my living room couch!
Yesterday was a night at the Madlab Theater (close to GV and a great time that's also playing tonight). Tonight is the Pizza Grand Prix and possibly a night out at Gallery Hop. I'm looking forward to seeing a ton of local art and, if it isn't too crowded, my first try of Barrel 44. Tomorrow will be a lovely hike through Highbanks Metropark to enjoy the early autumn cooldown. Next paycheck, I'm hoping to get to Alana's or to try another killer restaurant I haven't tried yet.
Cast off your Byrne inspired Drama Llama and get out to live a little! I'll even forgive the misspelling of "musing" if you do so.

I certainly sympathize with homesickness and the vague but real sense of emotional whiplash that comes with relocating. Nevertheless, it's no excuse to berate everyone else's passions and interests on a public forum. Most of the people here are here because they're involved in the city in some way and are doing something. Perhaps you should as well?
You might also want to consider it from this perspective - your list of past residences isn't necessarily all that exceptional among this crowd. Do you really want to alienate a group of people in this town who may be among the most likely to be able to relate to you and your experiences?
Last thought - depression (and an associated snideness) strikes me as being something that architects (and those who are studying to become one) seem to gravitate towards. Perhaps on occasion even as a bit of a fashionable pose. It is not, however, an occupational asset.
