How do you talk about music?
How do you describe what you hear?

YouÃ¢â‚¬â„¢re invited to participate in a unique, first-of-its-kind research study for music lovers. This study is being conducted by The Ohio State University Extension. Results will be used as part of a national research project.

Interviews will be held daily from 9:00 a.m. Ã¢â‚¬â€œ 9:00 p.m., February 1-7, 2010 at the Jazz Academy in the Lincoln Theatre Complex, 769 E. Long Street, Columbus, Ohio.

You're fine. They probably want a broad audience so they don't have skewed data. You can still enjoy music and know nothing about it. Everyone listens for different things.

I would love to do this, but totally don't have the time to take out for this right now. I've read Daniel J. Levitin, and find how music is understood and influences individuals and society fascinating. I hope a link to their results is posted in this thread or on CU. Otherwise, I might not hear about it, and I'd be interested in checking out what they are able to document. If any of you participants hear of where results will be published, please post. Thanks :)

I just got back from my interview. They were VERY grateful for the word of mouth from CU that brought in so many test subjects. I don't suppose there's any way we could find out what pieces we heard? There was one with a mandolin and saxophone that really caught my attention.

They said that there would be an email as a follow up with the results. Maybe through there you can inquire about the individual pieces, but probably not the ones you specifically heard since all comments will be anonymous. I did recognize a Thelonious Monk piece called "Misterioso" but was a little off put by it since the arrangement that they played had a violin in it.

I went on Wednesday night to participate. Lots of fun. Really glad I signed up for this.

The only artist I recognized was Kenny G. How embarrassing.

FWIW, 'Misterioso' is one of my favorite jazz compositions. Check out the version recorded by Sonny Rollins (w/Monk on piano) on one of Rollins' Blue Note albums.

I did this on Tuesday. It was odd. I was a little surprised at how little the tracks differed in genre. Other than that, I'm always happy to volunteer.

Same here, but I'm assuming part of the exercise is to determine future programming for events at the Lincoln Theatre? Most of what I heard was jazz, a bit of folk music, bluegrass, big band, swing, and some other related sub-genres.
