Moving: When to come to Columbus to scope rentals?

Hello!

My partner and I are moving to Columbus, hoping for an Aug 1 lease start date.* We are trying to figure out whether to visit the last week of June or the first week of July to look for a place (we're moving from the South, so only can come for a few days). Anyone see any advantages to one week or the other, in terms of how the local rental market works? I've been scoping Padmapper/CL for a few months and have rarely seen Aug rentals yet; I'm hoping June will bring more listings....

Thanks for any advice! We are looking forward to joining the community in Columbus.

*yes, I know there are already a lot of threads about moving, but I never saw any that dealt with advice on WHEN to look....nonetheless, sorry if this is repetitive.

The rental market is becoming a lot more competitive so I would look as soon as possible. You are giving yourself less than or about one month with your current time frame. If you have unlimited cssh to spend you can come down moving day, but if you are looking for the 800-1000 per month sweet spot it is tougher as they fly away quickly. Any kids/School needs? Where is your job? What do you like to do? Different parts of town have different prices and times they come on the market. I know a ton of people looking for rentals right now around Grandview to get into schools in August and it is tough and prices are at 1200-1500 or so.

Thank you! We are looking for Italian Village/Short North/Victorian Village/Harrison West, possibly Clintonville, possibly Downtown. Job is at OSU, so those neighborhoods seem most easily accessible - and we like to walk to restaurants etc. Not worried about schools. Ideal rent would be under $1200, but could go a little higher if necessary.

Time your visit for one of the CU happy hours. Seems some of the best rentals aren't listed and require getting into the desired locations to see the signs out. Make some friends over beer and I'm sure you'll find a handful of the neighborhood advocates willing to take you around.

Sounds fun - I'll keep an eye out for upcoming happy hours! Yeah, I read before that a lot of places just have signs up and don't list online - it's like that where I live now too - I was hoping maybe there was some super-secret local listing source that I would eventually find, but it seems not. Thanks for your response!
