Moving to city in less than 1 month, Need local help

Hello columbus, I'm moving there to go to CSCC at the end of this month. Right now I'm trying to find somewhere to live. I'd be really happy with anything under $550 and would allow me to have a dog. I'd like to be closer to somewhere where other students live, such as OSU's campus.. I have a car and am taking all online classes so traveling to the campus really isn't an issue.

Are there any places that truly stand out as relatively safe places to stay?

I've never been to the city before for an extended amount of time, and staring at the map really doesn't explain what any certain area is truthfully like.

I would suggest looking at the North (OSU) Campus area. I have known plenty of CSCC and CCAD students who live in area from Lane Ave up to around Hudson St (for student nightlife). The rents are pretty cheap and there is easy access to downtown via Summit St. It is also pretty safe with lots of students walking around. Also, most of the apartments in this area seem to allow dogs. The Olentangy Greenway is nearby and a great place to excercise your dog.

There are also plenty of casual bars and restuarants along High and other forms of entertaiment aimed at the high concentration of students that will not break your bank.

German Village has a number of dog-friendly apartments, though $550 a month might be a little low for most. Also, Victorian Village is a good bet; either is close to Columbus State and both with dog friendly neighborhoods and parks (German Village's Schiller Park and nearby Audubon Metro Park, Victorian Village's Goodale Park and Wheeler Park). Victorian Village has more students than German Village, since it is still on the same side of downtown (and I70) as OSU. Good luck!

Hi Bakerster,

You should do a CU search for this topic --people ask at least once every couple of weeks, and the advice given is usually pretty similar.

When I was an OSU grad student --about 10 years ago --I had an apartment just east of campus that I really loved. It had two bedrooms and only cost me $300/month. But I don't know that it would have matched your definition of "safe". I grew up in urban Columbus, so the area didn't bother me.

A lot of college students these days are moving into the Olde Towne East area. You can get something roomy and cheap there. But the neighborhood is very spotty so you'd want to get some advice on the exact street before moving in.

If you know the city well, you can get some very great deals in areas that are on the rise. But it really can be street-to-street in some places so it's hard to give advice without knowing exact addresses. The more established neighborhoods, on the other hand, tend to be more expensive.

I would scoff at the idea of a $550 apartment in German Village (the most expensive of the downtown Columbus neighborhoods), except that I have a friend who found a place in German Village around that price range. So they must be out there if you look.

I'd say it's probably easier in German Village to find a 2-bedroom apartment in the $900-$1100 range ($450-500 per person) rather than a 1-bedroom for $550. I lived 3 different apartments in the GV area in the recent past, all in the $500 range with roommates.

I think CC's recommendation for North Campus is probably the best so far for a person who wants an affordable rental *and* wants to be close to other students. The student population is significantly less in all of the other neighborhoods mentioned here (GV, VV, MV, etc).

but slightly more than you are looking to pay. I'd still go in and see if they have specials. most of the time I hear they do.

North Campsus or Clintonville (North of Hudson, South of North Broadway on either side of High St.) has a good mix of everything including bars, restaurants, coffee shops, thrift/antique stores, etc. etc.

Prices are reasonable and there are plenty of pet friendly apartments in the neighborhood.

I'll join in on the North Campus/Old North Columbus/South Clintonville suggestions. I think you'd be fine anywhere between Oakland to the south and North Broadway to the north. In general the streets are going to get quieter (and a bit older on average) as you head north. As far as green space goes, the west side of High as the Olentangy bike path, which will take you from downtown to worthington. The east side has Glen Echo park and Walhalla ravine (which is paved, but beautiful to walk through). In general, I think the southern end of that range has more of what you're looking for (more bars and students), but going a bit to the north would make it easier to walk to The Park of the Roses/Whetstone Park/Whetstone Library area. I wouldn't consider anything in that range unsafe, but if that's a big concern you'd probably be better off toward the north.

I'll sublet my apartment out.

North Vic Village (King & Highland) a safe neighborhood from my experiences aside from one instance where my pickup truck was broken into.
Bottom floor of a house (upstairs neighbors are nice folks, we hang out from time to time).
Private fenced yard (Deck + hot tub, though the hot tub hasn't been in use for over a year now because it is a utility hog)
3 car garage (I can fit my Grand Cherokee into it, but I couldn't fit my long bed F150 in); all three bays will be yours to use (housemate has the larger bedroom and an office in the house, that was the deal I cut).
My housemate is cool; she has a dog and 2 cats. All very chill animals for the most part and she keeps the litter boxes in her room.

Bedroom is around 14x14. Large closet.
Wood floors throughout except the bathroom has tile.
Kitchen has upgraded appliances & lots of cabinet space & a small pantry.
Washer & dryer in the basement.
Utilities are cheap(ish). Highest gas we saw last year was $140ish in the dead of winter. Electricity had high bills of $150 in the summer with the A/C blasting ($250 with the hot tub going). Internet & basic cable is free through housemate's work. Water is about $100 every 3 months.

It is hard to find a place to rent that will let you have a dog. Especially if the dog is big (over 30 lbs or so). Certain breeds also pose a problem.

Looking at a map can be very helpful IF:

you use Google earth, and turn on all the grocery stores, retails, gas stations and so on. This will give you a good idea of what you want to live by. Then take a streetview tour to get a closer view.

Then check the area on crimereports.com. This will allow you to see all the reported crime in the area so you can judge the area a bit better.

Then come back here and ask for feedback on a specific area/street you found.

I grew up on that block and can vouch for its safety. Even in the 80s and 90s when, according to every recent article on the Short North, the whole area was supposed to be a war zone, I never encountered any problems wandering around as a kid.

One possible perk of living in/near the King and Highland place would be that you're about a 15-20 minute walk from most of OSU's central campus, so if you want to use any of the libraries there you could. I don't think you could get internet on your own laptop unless you borrow someone's login (or maybe get a guest pass, not sure how that works), but you could at least go in and study there. You'd also be within walking distance of a lot of cool stuff. Hope you enjoy Columbus!

Also, without knowing the context, padmapper.com sounds like something completely different...

Just figured it'd help with the "under $550 and a dog" part, once the other posters had helped with the neighborhood advice.

Yes, my friend in German Village has a roommate --I had meant to mention that. The apartment wouldn't be in that range for someone living alone.
