I know we have some avid motorcyclists on CU, so maybe you guys can help me out. What are the noise standards for motorcycles in Columbus?

I notice that motorcycles (is it just H-D's?) tend to run significantly louder than cars. I notice this especially in Grandview, when a group of dads will often park their bikes near the curb, disturbing everyone who's trying to have a conversation in the Stauf's/ Jeni's/ Spagio patio areas.

Are motorcycles required by law to have mufflers? If so, are the mufflers just not very good at muffling noise? Or is the muffler requirement simply ignored by motorcycle owners and not enforced by police?

And yes, I'm aware there's a South Park episode that addresses this issue. So at least we know it's a nation-wide phenomenon.

Oh, man. I live on High Street and the only street noise that ever bothers me is from motorcycles. Yes, you're very manly and you got from that one stoplight to the next stoplight very quickly. Good for you. Now shut the fuck up.

+1000. Living on High has made me hate H-D riders. Do you have to twist the goddamn throttle EVERY SINGLE TIME you pass a girl or a group of two or more people? So fucking obnoxious. Nobody wants to hear that shit, and anytime I'm with a girl when it happens their response is always "what an asshole." And yes, I know I'm overgeneralizing.

It's part of the HD culture to have loud ass pipes. And it's part of the reason I think HDs suck giant balls.

(I do give an exemption though for the 2 stroke Italian made Harleys from the 60's and 70's. I do love the sound of a 2 stroke engine...so perhaps I'm not the best to comment on noise :) )

My brother is a staunch defendant of the phrase "Loud Pipes Save Lives" It seems like maybe the pipes should face forward if that is their objective.

I commute on a chainsaw on wheels daily. I know she's sorta loud, sorta smelly, but gosh darnit, I like her. And, I'm riding while all those other suckers are stuck in their cars listening to bad morning shows. :)

I hate that nonsense...it's just a dumb justification for why HD dudes feel they don't need helmets...blech.

I love Godzilla...that noise doesn't even compare to those loud ass cruiser bikes.

My commute is always via bicycle-the suckers are burning fossil fuel...

I don't want this to turn into a hater thread. Motorcycles are awesome and loud engines definitely stoke a fire in the depths of my y-chromosome. But they're really unwelcome in neighborhoods. I just wish the noise could be restricted to motorcycle rallies and maybe freeways.

That said, I also take issue with obnoxiously loud cars too. From car stereos to free flowing and open exhausts. I make no exceptions for straight pipped American V8s either.

It's a respect thing... most people don't have it, especially when they are attention whoring.

+1. I listen to my car stereo at a deafening level, but I always make sure to turn it down when beside someone at a light or filling up or wherever.

Thanks for starting this conversation. I agree. There is a time and a place for Motorcycles, but that time and place isn't riding through a residential neighborhood and unnecessarily revving engines at 11pm at night loud enough to wake up our sleeping baby inside the house with the windows closed.

It really doesn't have anything to do with motorcycles themselves... just a small handful of inconsiderate assholes who happen to be riding a motorcycle and doing stuff like that.
