Mother Nature Needs You!
They say good friends don’t grow on trees… but then why do I always find such good friends whenever there are lots of trees around?
CAN YOU LEND US A HAND TO ADVANCE OUR EFFORTS IN EDUCATION & LAND PRESERVATION ON BEHALF OF OUR NATIVE FOREST?
~A message from Mandy Henderson, Arc of Appalachia Preserve System Volunteer Coordinator
Dear Friends,
This year the Arc of Appalachia is rapidly expanding in new and exciting directions. The current buzzword is definitely "MORE"! More as in MORE NEWLY ACQUIRED NATURE PRESERVES (we are closing on two more tracts next week), more Appalachian Forest School courses, more workshops of all kinds, more guided hikes, more retreats, more hiking trails, more programs for school children, more land stewardship, more commitment to the Native American earthworks in our care, more no-nonsense "tree-roots" networking, more friends, more healthy relationships with plants and animals, more healthy relationships with people, more inspiration, more mystery, more blessings.
Thinking of the work ahead, and how much help we need, puts me in the mood to bestow titles, awards, home-cooked dinners, back massages, and undying affection on whoever has to good will to step up and give us a hand! I can promise you this, there isn't a chance you won't feel thoroughly appreciated! Enter this forest as its servant, and you will receive gifts back of incalculable value -- homecoming, belonging, and a life filled with meaning and purpose.
We have a brand new volunteer website showing you where we need the help the most. Check it out for details on where we need our volunteers the most or take a look at the summary below. HIGHLY REDUCED LODGING AVAILABLE IF YOU NEED OVERNIGHT ACCOMMODATIONS.

Volunteer Vacations -- Spring Cleaning our Lodges
April 4-7, 2011 5 hours daily work time
Want to get away from it all during the height of spring wildflower season, and stay at one of our beautiful lodges for free? We need folks to wash windows, and help deep-clean and organize our lodges. Give us 5 hours of volunteer time per day and spend the rest of your time dreaming, hiking, reflecting, writing… whatever your heart desires. Stay as many days as you like between April 4-7 -- Monday through Thursday night.
For more information on the above needs,
please see our website for volunteer details and/or write or give me a call with ideas on however you think you can help.
Above ground, the forest looks like a collection of individual trees. Below ground the roots of those trees are physically interconnected with a complex network of mycorrhizal fungi that makes the forest ONE complex functioning entity, with many diverse expressions. In the real world, none of us stand alone. It takes a vast "underground" network to keep the "Ark" afloat, and it is our volunteers who keep our good work driving forward. Thanks in advance for sharing your time and talents.
Sincerely,
Mandy Henderson
