The street behind me is a short block that dead ends into our garage, so I'm not sure lights are a priority there. There *is* one light on each end of the street. We also have our back porch light on all night/every night, FWIW. I generally stick to the main roads when walking and haven't had a problem with the amount of light -- it seems perfectly adequate. I just wish more people behind us would turn their porch lights on.This is a good point. If most houses in a neighborhood turned on their porch lights, there probably wouldn't be a need for street lights in most areas. Human eyes are actually pretty good at adapting to low but diffuse light levels.
My folks live in the burbs and everyone has a street light at the end of the drive. With them all on it is pretty bright and quite charming.
