I asked my coworkers here in Atlanta, if you had very deep pockets, what would be your one gift to your hometown. The replies ranged from humanitarian to landmarks to wiping out everything south of I-20 and filling it with water. I thought, for Columbus, I'd give, maybe a world class Natural History Museum or a world class Air and Space Museum. Or maybe even a subways or monorails. It's hard to pick just one. Which got me thinking ... what does Columbus need?

Step 1: Build/own/operate a highrise office downtown
Step 2: Set up a program for new grads of local colleges to startup their own businesses and operate out of my building. I'd provide the office space free of charge for a set incubation period. At the end of that period, the company would either be able to a) lease the space from me (this money would go back to new startups) or b) move out and continue expanding their business. I suppose the could also c) fold. But I'm an optimist.
If I were a billioinare with nothing better to do, I think it would be fun to read proposals all day and dole out money/free office space to the most deserving.

Subway system that is less than a half mile walk from anywhere in columbus proper, and will stretch out to every suburb, where a bus system exists to make it so no one ever has to drive if they don't want.

In addition to In n Out Burgers, I'd also fix up the bike trails. There are decent bike trails in Columbus but too many of them dead end or go nowhere or don't connect with other trails. I'd like nice, well maintained, never-ending bike trails that you could take all over and around town and to the outlying 'burbs, plus trails that go all the way to Springfield, Yellow Springs, Dayton and beyond. The bike trails in Dayton were better than they are here, and that's a sad state of affairs.

At the Architects charette I went to a few months ago, a representative of the Columbus parks was there and said that adding tons of bike trails will be on the horizon soon. :)

Agreed that a subway/rail line would be awesome.
But I would also like to see more things like art sculptures sitting around downtown and just in unexpected places. I thought it was awesome when Columbus had artists to those corn sculptures and then placed them around the city.
