The Ohio Dominican University Graphic Design and Fine Arts department is hosting its annual senior thesis exhibition, Miscellanea Art & Design Show, featuring 12 artists ranging from graphic artists, graphic designers, and art educators. The exhibit will be on display May 1 – July 10, 2009 in the Wehrle Hall Exhibit at Ohio Dominican University at 1216 Sunbury Road, Columbus OH 43219. The opening reception is open to the public and will be held on May 3 from 1:00 pm – 3:30 pm, with awards at 2:00 pm.
The show’s theme “Miscellanea†is based around the variety of styles of work that the student artists have created. There is an array of art including a fusion of traditional Japanese culture with a modern graffiti aesthetic, a graphic novel, a business design layout for a unique online company, a graphic design magazine, and a design tribute to iconic 90’s music. Much of the work on display embodies the theme of “Miscellanea†by the hybrid incorporations of different techniques of art and design. For example, senior graphic designer Sam Ballinger created marketing and promotional pieces for a local band that are traditionally graphic and fuses them with elements of fine arts through his methods of framing and installation. Artist Jenna Stevens exemplifies a similar style of hybrid graphic art through her 3 dimensional magazine cover layout.
Artists in the showcase include Samuel Ballinger, Devin Cowan, Chris Eaken, Mike Federle, Andrew Helvey, Patrick Moore, Kim Morrison, Steph Morrison, Mel Pena, Jason Pikula, Dominic Presutto, and Jenna Stevens.
This annual exhibit is the University’s first predominately design-based show, and marks a new emphasis in the program. The ODU Graphic Design program is a new and developing program at the University. Over the past few years the department has been led in new direction aimed towards preparing students for careers in a variety of graphic design and creative development fields.
