wow $280,000 seems cheap for that structure. Even if it is in a pretty bad place. I'm going to assume that this will bring an end to the art studios at some point in the near future. I certianly hoep not, but not many folks look at art studios as a viable business. Lets hope for the best and find those artist a new homke if all else fails.

Yeah $280,000 does seem cheap. My partner and I moved out there this past January, we loved the space and fellow artists but disliked the management and disrepair. There were several new artists, new to Columbus even that moved in there early this year and others that have been there a long long time. Maybe with any luck whoever bought it will keep it what it is but repair it, so all these people can stay there.

As it's no news that Junctionview was purchased for ultimte distruction a little over a year ago. With some powerfull bartering and a huge sense of community we were able to negotiate using the space for a few years and got leases. This was mostly possible because of the scope of the grandview yard project and when the last was actually needed to build on. I know we a good at JV for a bit, but studio space in Columbus is becoming a premium. Again good luck with life at Milo as it has been edgy over there for a while.

I was told by a developer recently that these kinds of spaces aren't viable at the rates folks will pay for raw space (0.50 or so a square foot).
That is, without the some serious aid from nonprofits and grants and such.
It would probably cost a fortune to rehab Milo to get it all repaired from what I remember from the last time I was there.

Yeah Milo was not in the best of shape at my last visit. I found a few places in the building that I even questioned walking on/over. I know there have been several fires that have gutted a few studios and I'm not sure if those ever got rehabbed.
I will say to any Milo residents that you should make it a priority to check out the new Franklinton studios while they are still available. The words Mike Reed speaks are very on point with economic conditions vs. studio costs. So get it while it's somewhat cheap.

yeah we have currently 3-4 spaces that could be used as studios. ive been working like a mad man for the past 4 days on getting the plumbing going and jim + others have been cleaning and organizing. if we were to have more interest we can chop up the sanctuary into more studios as well. right now the 2 rooms are approx 225 sqft. not the biggest. but then we have a large L shaped room that could be split into another pair of 300 sqft spaces. the sanctuary could house several spaces from 300 to 400 sqft. the space has 2 bathrooms and a utility room with a large sink. the building also has air conditioning! heat of course. its a very secure structure and is well lit at night. come on down saturday night and check it out. its a basic rectangular building thats about 3,300 sqft. again not the massive size of Whittier or JV but could house 4 to 5 artists comfortably.

I would start there by emailing Nikos who is the president of the FAD. Jim Sweeny may also be able to provide information. He stated in the Go West thread that the event this weekend will unveil them. I would also suggest going to the Go West show and checking them out it person. I am yet to actually see the facility, but believe that it is new builds on the spaces and I even heard rumors about building to suit spaces.

It's all a question mark for Milo until the Timken site gets figured out. Between what's coming online with Jeffery Mining, Coated Fabrics; what's come online with Kramer Paints, Taylor Terrace; and what's still left to be figured out for 3M and smaller sites throughout this area, who knows what (re)use the market will bear.
The scale of sites in Franklinton is much smaller. Granular change is possible. Smaller projects are feasible (and building codes for such projects is much less onerous, such as exiting and fire supression). Big site question marks like Timken aren't just hanging out there.
You sell your soul to redevelop a site like Timken. Sites in Franklinton might only require a kidney or two.

I would even venture to say that Milo itself will either be allowed to continue until demolition is certian or the buyers will just flat out shut it down. I don't see much of an effort to revamp the building to squeeze pennies out of it.
Now as for Franklinton I believe that there is plenty of existing structures that with the help of FAD and Chris Sherman could easily be made into working studios and even some decent galley settings with little effort.
There are at times openings and opportunities for open studios at Junctionview, but it is far harder to get into at this point and just like Milo our fate is uncertain long term.

Doesn't seem like there were many events oriented towards the public, which might explain why this thread is ending with people attending an art-oriented event in Franklinton, not Milo-Grogan, which also needs attention. Poor thing.
