If you do not like braggarts or geeky stuff I would advise not reading this.
I have had a dell inspiron e1705 laptop since late 2006 and paid around 1700 dollars for it, with warranty and complete care. I had some problems with it, they replaced the mobo, speakers, dvdrw, battery, keyboard, and 2 ac adapters. I needed another new battery. I was sick of it, and asked if I could get a whole new computer, they said yes. i found out exactly what I am going to be getting today.
XPS 1730
dual core 2.5ghz 6mb cache
17" 1900x1200
4gb ram
1 320gb hd and 1 64gb solid state hd
8800 gtx SLI 1GB graphics card
blu ray burner
tv tuner
b/g/n card
bluetooth
This is basically a 5000 dollar computer, they are giving me. You cannot beat dell's customer service.

Wow, maybe things have changed back again. They were good in the late 90's, but I heard all kinds of complaints about them in undergrad (2000-'04) and early law school, at least until '05.
Dell customer service even became a joke.

I am so jealous you are getting an XPS.
I just got a 1720 (like, in the last 6 months) with Vista on it and it's SOOOO slow. The xps makes me drool... I am about to throw this one out the window.

new ubuntu out, pretty slick, more advanced graphics than the mac!
come hack python!
and being the nerd that i am, i'm currently at the Max & Erma's at Port Columbus ( CMH ! ) getting ready to go to ROFLCon. No word if the Cherry Chocolate Rain guy is going to be there, but I hope to see the guy that made his own Tron suit, at least.

So is the OS running on the solid state? Because that will be sweet. Anyhow, that is a SICK machine. It's also the biggest laptop in existance. I hope you don't have to lug that thing around much. BUT it's also one of the most powerful and the add ons you got are ridiculous. A Blu Ray burner? Jeez

I would assume the OS is going to be on the solid state, I guess we will see next week. If not I do clean installs anyway, so I will put it on the solid state. I actually looked on ebay, these SS drives are going for aroun 700, I might just sell that drive. I also think it has to be a refurb there is no way they are going to give me a laptop like that brand new. I don't take it anywhere, I have a HP for that. I got completely rid of my desktops because of space issues, so this will sit at home.
AS far as the mac vs pc. I actually was thinking of getting a 17" powerbook pro when I bought the e1705, but for what i use it for, word, excel, outlook, winamp, firefox, I could not really justify paying an extra 1000 dollars, for something that basically looked cooler. Plus there are no macs on the market that can match the specs of the new XPS I am getting.
