Is it just me, or is anyone else disturbed that Valvoline is one of the main sponsors of Gallery Hop this month? Seems to be going more corporate than the bohemian-arts vibe I have such fond memories of!

I guess the things I take from this are:
a) Be happy there is still a Gallery Hop given what I imagine is some decent overhead on the part of the org to promote and run it. That a company is willing to fork over some cash as a donation/sponsorship in the current economy should be applauded.
b) If you don't agree with the business sponsoring, then put your money where your mouth is and either pony up the cash to replace their sponsporship or create your own super cool uber indie non-commercial arts walk.
Valvoline? Really? Had no clue.. That's too bad. I see your point lotw but it's more of a traditional thing. The neighborhood has changed though. I remember as a kid 20-25 years ago the number of galleries outweighted the restaurants and bars, that's def turned. I'm not trying to be mean but it's almost a stretch to call it an arts district anymore. How many galleries are there?
Valvoline?

It does seem like an odd fit, but it doesn't really bother me that much. Sounds like the same event with a Valvoline booth added. I don't think anyone is required to stop by it.
How much can it possibly cost the SNBA to run Gallery Hop, though? Really, enough to need a corporate sponsor? How much overhead can there even be for a bunch of shops and galleries to stay open later?
I wouldn't say it bothers me, just a little disappointed. Disappointed about tough times.
Sometimes you gotta sell out in order to get paid.
I noticed Valvoline was also sponsoring the Keep Columbus Beautiful Plant Pride on Parsons event is also sponsored by Valvoline.
meh. I guess if it gets them money for equipment and stuff for the volunteers, that's good.
I guess the oil companies need to find something to spend their record profits on...

I don't think times *are* tough though. Most of the time, Gallery Hop is presented by CD101 or The Alive and nobody pays any attention.
I believe Holiday Hop this year was presented by Time Warner.
I was thinking that THIS EVENT at Brothers Drake sounded like a lot of fun tonight. Mead. Live music. DJs.
But now that Valvoline is a sponsor of Gallery Hop, it sounds like a terrible time. Should probably just stay at home.
I guess we really don't have to worry too much until it is sponsored by that Plasma Center. ;)

i was referring to the economy in general. dont forget nature bars and outlook. cd101 has been at gallery hop for at least 12 13 years now. im not bitching, just lost its charm i guess for me. i will venture down later on tonight for quality and check out nikos' show at haiku.
if they didnt need the sponsorship well then there ya go... im assuming they do. i think it wouldnt be in the best interest of an arts district to slap valvolines name as a presenting sponsor for shits and giggles. that seems kinda silly to me.
with urban scrawl we utilize donations and grant money, that grant money is seeded from corporate sponsors, the wood is donated from home depot. when you dont have many options for funding its the path to take.
And also parking!
I have been going to Gallery Hop for many years. I have to say I think it needs a redux. It feels like we are just going through the motions.
I think they need to start closing high street to car traffic.
