Master's Degree in the Dumpster

So I was dumpstering in Victorian Village today and found some nice leather boots, some perfect rubber golashes, some women's pants, purses, nice tin cans, a suitcase, a picture frame, a B.A. degree from the University of Pittsburgh and a M.A. dergee from OSU.
The B.A. is still in a frame and from 2000. The M.A. is still in its original folder and is from 2003.
I am puzzled. Should I contact the person whose name is on the degrees? Did this person die and someone cleaning out the apt tossed them? Did this person realize the realities her past state-sponsored institutionalization/conditioning and reject her diplomas? Was it a mistake?
I am confused. Any guesses? I think I am going to try to contact this person just in case.

Probably they didn't pay their rent and got evicted or something and the landlord kept their stuff. I would try to look the person up, that seems weird. It would at least be a major pain to try to get your diplomas reprinted.

When I was 14-16, I used to dive in the dumptster behind this bike store in Reynoldsburg. They were always throwing away perfectly good brakes, cables, levers, pads, seats, bearings, etc. Nice to have all those spare parts on hand at the time.

More and more often actually.
I can usually clean and sell the clothes I find. I found a really nice mint condition Penguin button up the other day and some Ben Sherman shirt too.

Most dumpsters are located on private property, so going through them is typically not a legal activity.
Rooting through people's information is an invasion of privacy to say the least. If I were contacted by someone who went through my trash and found information to contact me with, I'd report them to the police immediately.
Just sayin.

I don't see a degree from OSU as personal information. That's a public thing that is announced in front of thousands at Ohio Stadium, in the program, probably listed on the departmental website, etc. etc. There is absolutlely nothing personal or private on this thing. I already knew that Karen Holrook was the Presdient, I already know that OSU is in Columbus.
I would argue that a diploma is a public statement of accomplishment, and that a license plate on a car is more private information than a diploma yet we display those. We show strangers our ID's daily when at the bank, using a credit card, buying beer, etc. We sign up for on-line bill pay, and paypal, and all these systems that we trust our personal private information with.

As far as I know, Cyclist doesn't have an official privacy policy. Maybe you should create one and post them on the houses that correspond to the dumpsters you are fond of diving in. Most people don't expect someone to root around in their trash and may be more careful about what they discard. If they like you and know what you're looking for, maybe they'll even stop mixing in the clothing and diplomas with apple cores, diapers and egg shells.
