you know, I could go on and on and on...I loved the 80's tremendously..and miss them. I love to make playlists on my ipod. When I die, I am def. going to return as a DJ. I think some of my choices could fall right into the "cheese" category..but when music creates a mood. takes you back, and makes you want to dance...then there is nothing "cheesy" about that.

hah, 2/3ds of that (especially the English pop) could be a mixtape I made my Junior year of high school :-)

I've not heard anyone mention Depeche Mode, and that was a staple of my 80s.

well, I was going to add some DP, but my list was so long...it would be hard to pick only one!! I just looked at my Itunes,and I think I have over 50 DP songs on there...Man, I realllly miss mix-tapes. Mix CD's are just not as cool.

I also missed some Cyndi Lauper...I loved "when u were mine"

also Grant Lee Phillips did a KILLER remake of Love My Way

OK, here's an interesting playlist. I decided to make a smaller constraint and create a playlist that covers music released between 1971-1975.

I'm guessing that lots of people will have different ideas about what to put on a playlist like this, and I'd love to hear them.

All songs are in order by year, but not actual release date.

Curtis Mayfield - Pusherman
Richard Thompson - The Poor Ditching Boy
Plainsong - True Story Of Amelia Earhart
Todd Rundgren - Dust In The Wind
Willie Nelson - She's Not For You
Loudon Wainwright III - The Swimming Song
Waylon Jennings - Black Rose
ZZ Top - La Grange
Skull Snaps - It's A New Day
Robert Calvert - The Widow Maker
Richard & Linda Thompson - I Want to See the Bright Lights Tonight
Tom Waits - Better Off Without A Wife
Steely_Dan - With a Gun
Big Star - Thank You Friends
Leonard Cohen - A Singer Must Die
Brian Eno - Third Uncle
David Bowie Diamond Dogs
Brian Eno - I'll Come Running
Neil Young - Don't Cry No Tears
Led Zeppelin - Houses Of The Holy

There's not very much hard rock or funk on here, and it could use a bit more of the former and a lot more of the latter. I probably could use some Jazz too. anything off of Herbie Hancock: Head Hunters or Thrust probably

Also, there's some country on here. I think that the early 70s was a great time for country music, so I put on some Waylon and Willie. I probably should have put Kris Kristofferson too, but I had none.

Having listened to this a lot over the last few days, I've noticed two things:

1. The production sounds great. The engineers really knew their shit back then. They paid close attention to the dynamic range and didn't overcompress the shit out of everything. It shows.

2. I can really hear the progression of the years in this mix.. I get a pretty strong feeling when I sit down and listen to this of what happened in music from 1971-1975 which was want I was shooting for.

I've got an idea for another one o' these too, except a wider cross-section of music and a narrower period of time.

Well, the idea with this list was 71-75, so only Dylan would have been eligible.

Knocking on Heaven's Door would fit right in with all the other country and folk stuff in 73 though.

See, that's kinda why I did the constraint of 75. There was a lot in 76 that I would have liked to include, but didn't. I wanted to showcase a sound.

I do agree that Desire is his best album from the 70s.

Hrmm, I should have put some Jimmy Cliff on there too :-p
