Also some of Stephen Merrit's versions of Human League songs are pretty fun.

it's real weird to think of Galaxie 500 being played at an 80s dance night.

This is the most interesting playlist I made recently. It was for my wife, based on her masters' thesis, which was about how black people and hip-hop culture are starting to part ways. So this mix is made up pretty evenly of non-black hip-hop and black musicians doing non-hip-hop songs (I do realize that those labels are iffy on some of these!)
Most of these tracks are from two excellent (and free!) music samplers available at Amazon.com, "boldaslove.us presents Fire in the Dark" and "JDub presents Wild Peace"
Ich Bin A Border By Mayn Vayb - Socalled
Get Yo S**t - Black Joe Lewis & The Honeybears
Day Dream Nation - Envelope
Fear of Numbers - Milk Plus
Put 'Em Up - Soulico, Lyrics Born and Axum
Dope Sagittarius - Dope Sagittarius
Everybody - Divisible
Six Days - DJ Shadow
The Caesarz - Take Me Away
Paper Planes - M.I.A.
Slowly - Faith
Cowboy Song - Socalled
The Ballad of Fletcher Reede - The Smyrk
Heaven For The Weather - The Streets
Blak Girls - Shelley Nicole's Blakbushe
Nine Hours to Go - Po' Girl featuring C.V. Avery
Ocean - Tamar-Kali
Look - Solillaquists of Sound
Raw - Sabatta
Joro Boro - Balkan Beat BoxOther songs I might add to this would be:
Gym Class Heroes - Girlfriend
Gnarls Barkley - Crazy
Outkast - Hey Ya!
Speech Debelle - The Key
Gorillaz - Clint Eastwood and Feel Good
Hard n' Phirm - Pi
Black Kids - I'm Not Gonna Teach Your Boyfriend How to DancePosted 2 years ago # -

I Can't Go For That (No Can Do)-- Hall & Oates
Hey Sandy (theme from Pete & Pete) -- Polaris
I'm Not the Man I Used To Be-- Fine Young Cannibals
The best Cars song ever is still Drive, although it's a slow song. Then again if I ever DJed I'd probably suck because I'd play lots of slow songs like Surrender by Suicide. Like, wear-my-letter-jacket-baby type stuff.
More Than This-- Bryan Ferry
...and don't laugh but Come On Eileen might be one of my favorite songs ever, yes I know it's overplayed, but it makes the ladies shake it, and might even get some Eileens to come on.
Don't forget Jesus and Mary Chain, Pretenders, Naked Eyes, Kate Bush, Gang of Four, KLF...I knew I liked you for a reason :-D
Pretty much yes to all of those songs with the same caveat you mentioned. If you throw too many slow songs at a dance floor you run the risk of clearing it.

As far as 80's pop/dance tunes go maybe some GoGo's& Young MC..?? If tipsy enough, I'd most definitely shake my ass to that. Sometimes I do accidentally while sober behind the bar ;-)I had to listen to Head Over Heels" about 4 times in a row off of You-Tube the other day. That bass solo and the hand claps are freaking brilliant...
I don't feel as strongly about Young MC, but "Bust A Move" is still a solid dance track.

For any 80's night, I would also want Kenny Acker and Michael Murtha to add their two cents. And Ed Luna seems to really like the Skully's 80's night-- wonder what he'd play though?

I noticed a lack of Phil Collins. I find it hard to spell 80's without Sussudio...you dig?Sorry man, this train doesn't stop at Sussudio. That song put me off just about everything Phil Collins forever.
What about "In The Air Tonight?" There were some great Genesis songs too, like "I Can't Dance". The video was hysterical for that one.

That said, I'm pretty sure he'd play Kraftwerk :-)

@michaelcoyote - You'll have to excuse some of my taste. I was born in 1983. I'm trying!

Like I said, I'm picky about my music, but at the same time I'm well aware of liking some cheesy stuff (i.e. Duran Duran - Girls On Film).
Of course if you want to throw out your own playlist, please do.

I totally forgot about them, and they're from Columbus too. I'll grant that it's not much of a dance mix, but you have a little something for everyone there.

Ok, here's some 80s mixes from Jeff Mills from the mid to late 80s when he was on The Electrifying Mojo's show on WDRQ in Detroit.
Lots of period R&B and Hip Hop mixed with House and very early proto-techno. The turntable skills are really great and pretty consistent with good quality hip hop mixes of the time.

Speaking of the RC Mob I saw them play a mini-set at Little Brothers a couple years ago. It was Ray Fuller's 50th birthday show and they had 4 or 5 incarnations of the Bluesrockers each play a set with him. The RC Mob guys were his backup band at one time, but when he didn't show up for a show they went on without him & the Mob was born. At LBs they played part of a set with Ray then did several RC Mob songs. It was good hearing them again and the evening was quite a tribute to Ray, still Bluesrockin'
