Mellow Mushroom to open second location

Mellow Mushroom pizza restaurant will open its second Ohio location in Dublin.

Mellow Mushroom Pizza Bakers opened its first Ohio store near the Polaris Fashion Place in early 2009 and is planning to open at 6506 Dublin Center Drive before March.

According to a news release, franchisee Jon Zachrich expects to open the restaurant, designed by Powell-based architect Buck Wince, before St. Patrick's Day.

The food is average and takes way too long to prepare but the tap selection makes it all worth it.

I haven't been to the Polaris location, but am semi-familiar with the chain's origins and ties to college campuses in the south and their appeal to the college demographic.

So that being said, why Dublin and Polaris? Why aren't they gunning for an OSU location? Perhaps the pizza market at OSU is already oversaturated?

I was wondering the same thing when they announced they were opening the first Columbus location at Polaris. The whole vibe of the place seems better fitted in a campus location, but as you said, maybe they feel like the market is too packed with other pizzerias.

I still encourage people to check this place out. I thought their pizza, the buffalo chicken in particular, was fan-freaking-tastic. The beer selection is also vast and impressive.

I love the Polaris location (though agree w/MFRONE about the prep time) and contrary to what I would expect, there are always a lot of families. With kids. A lot of little kids. So I would imagine that they might be going for a similar demographic of young families in Dublin?

Also, I don't know if I would have appreciated the craft beer selection back in my college days. Maybe they're also marketing for adults with better-developed tastes? :)

Rent on campus makes starting anything there a much more risky investment. When I worked for All-in-one (Kentucky Taco Burger Hut) back in 94, the cost before even opening the doors and paying staff was $20k a month.. rent was over half that, and they raised it again (which is one reason they closed it and built the TB at 9th).. I wouldn't even want to imagine what the monthly rent is down there now especially in SC Gateway...

larger wallets in polaris and dublin? we can't get out of there for less than $60, but fair value

agree that prep time is long, we avoid during weekend

they tried to get space in short north near the beginning of 2010

Their pizzas are too expensive for campus. People near Polaris and Dublin are easier to entice into paying more than $20 for a pizza, and with a lower food cost, you can make up for the rent. Also, the expansive craft beer selection, the only reason I ever want to go, isn't fit for the college masses.

Ah, gotcha. Didn't know their prices were so high. I imagine they probably weren't when first getting started a few decades ago and have increased their costs over time and grown away from campuses. Hrm.

I probably won't try it out anytime soon. Too many good pizza options close to home for much more reasonable prices.

I bet those pizzas dont have jerk chicken on them. Mellow Mushroom is for the "outside of the box" pizzas. that said, I've been there once. :)

Places like Bono, Yellow Brick, and Clever Crow all do "out of the box" pizza amazingly well without having to drive to the end of the earth or pay a ton o' cash.
Dewey's in Grandview does some tasty stuff too.

Now I'm gonna need some pizza this weekend. :)

Usually get one of the cheaper sandwiches or calzones at MM to go with the beers. Like Yellow Brick and Clever Crow for pizza. And Hounddog's for a simple, cheap pizza with the garlicky, buttery goodness on the crust.

sausage, bacon, and mushroom on smokin joe's crust with spicy sauce from Hounddog's is one of my favorite evil indulgences. :)

Not sure specifically about jerk chicken, but between Yellow Brick, Clever Crow, Surly Girl, zpizza, Plank's, Minuteman and Sarafino's, our bases for any variety of styles and toppings are pretty covered within a mile or two from home. ;)

That said, if Mellow Mushroom is your thing, go for it. I'm in no way bashing them... I just don't travel as far anymore for food. Getting old. ;)

Mellow Mushroom Pizza Bakers will open its second Ohio location in Dublin March 14. The pizza chain that expanded to Ohio in 2009 with a location at 2170 Polaris Parkway will open its second store at 6505 Dublin Center Drive on March 14.
