Terminus or Through-Route for Madison's Downtown Station?

In the gospel of intercity rail planning, the need to locate stations downtown is one of the commandments. Unlike airplanes, trains can get you right to the center-city. That kind of direct service encourages transit-oriented development and the creation of dense neighborhoods.

Wisconsin Governor Jim Doyle (D) announced earlier this month that he would locate the terminus of the stateÃ¢â‚¬â„¢s new east-west intercity rail line just two blocks from the capitol and just adjacent to MadisonÃ¢â‚¬â„¢s central business district. The 85-mile line will connect Milwaukee with Madison in 75 minutes by 2013 thanks to an $823 million grant from the federal government and a commitment to purchasing several new Talgo trainsets from the state government.

You mean they are not going to give the 823 million back to the Federal Government like Ohio is threatening to do?

Madison and Columbus are the most alike cities that I can think of. Both are state capitals, population density is about the same, both are in the center of a mainly agricultural state, both have major universities, both have college athletic cult followings and both have a downtown about the same size. However, their political bent makes people from Columbus look like Rush Limbaugh. Pilsner would be happy there.

It's too bad we can't trade some of our milder weather for one of their lakes.

But, isn't the metro of Madison around 500,000? I would think the additional 1.2 million in Columbus's metro might make th two cities plenty different.

This makes me think of what so called politician "chucky" thinks about this development (from the 3C is in trouble thread here). He counted on Wisconsin throwing back the 820million so that he(?) could build his mythical Pittsburgh to Chicago route.

Density is about the same

Columbus counts about 2.5 times more area.

I have to imagine that they do have Republicans in Wisconsin, and I imagine they're raising the same stinks there as they are here. You're just not expose to all of that in this specific article. ;)

Leading Republican candidate for governor of Wisconsin vows to cancel the the Ghost train in Wisconsin, it will be the first thing he does.

This is what will kill it.

Since they have decided to change the station location in Madison, enviromental studies will need to be conducted, just as they are in Ohio. They wont be done until next year. By that time a new Governor will be in office in Wisconsin.

Politics being bizzare this year, the anti spending candidates are being voted in.

Just as Ohio does not have to payback the enviromental money, neither will Wisconsin.

Pittsburgh to Chicago will become reality.

CEO of the Wisconsin Southern Railway caught giving illegal campaign contributions.

Which rail line runs from Madison to Milwaukee that would have their rail lines completely upgraded free of charge ?

Why that's Wisconsin & Southern rail.

If the University of Wisconsin student wont ride it because it's twice as expensive as the bus service, where are the riders going to come from ?

Students in Wisconsin lukewarm to the idea at best.

A standing-room-only crowd showed up to a public meeting in Madison Tuesday evening to hear, "the train is coming." The first question was by high-speed and commuter train opponent, Bill Richardson, who asked, is this a done deal? He received an affirmative response from State of Wisconsin DOT representatives.

Your position is this train is not going to happen,, right? Not being a smart ass, just not sure from your postings. So you are saying that the Wisconsin DOT representative was not telling the truth when confirming that "the train is coming" is a "done deal".

And it sounded like there was one asshole in the back of the room that eventually left in that meeting.

The last sentence in the story, you may have missed it.

" There was loud applause especially after each citizens speaker posed his or her objections to the governmemtal panel "

Sounds like the all of Madison is behind this train.

I just love that the picture for their "trains only make congestion worse" isn't even at a rail crossing.

ETA

Also love the lack of citations and references to back any of the claims.
