I tried Louie's on the recommendation of a review on here. My dining partner and I split 5 items - The Jalapeño Soup, the Chipotle Crab Chowder, the plantains, the Cuban (they renamed their original and added pickles) and the Mofungo Chicken.
Both soups and the plantains were amazing. The soups were very creamy, with big flavors, and just the right amount of spice. They were two of the best soups Ive ever had, and Im a big fan of soup and eat it often. Plus, the $3-$3.50 cups were easily the size of $5.95 bowls anywhere else. Sadly, thats the highlight.
The Cuban and the Mofungo had awesome flavors. The Mofungo is a chicken breast stuffed with a mixture of plantains, ham, bacon, and monty jack cheese and then breaded and fried. The mixture was incredible, but Im sad to say the chicken was dry and very tough, while the breading was "peely". Without doubt (Ive worked in kitchens for 17 years) this dish was fried the night before and just reheated in the microwave when I ordered it. The black beans that accompanied the chicken were some of the best Ive had outside Texas, and the chipotle sauce and green onion cream sauce that topped the whole dish was outstanding. The Cuban had good flavor as well, and the ham was a thick steak cut with roasted pork - not deli stuff. Sadly, the meat was so tough we both had to take it off the sandwich and cut it into pieces then reassemble the dish.
The flavors of the soups, the sauces, and the Mofungo's stuffing were incredible and spot on, which makes the "freshness issue" with the chicken and the Cuban meat all the more saddening. I'll give it another try - the tastes alone are worth a second chance - and at a total food bill of $32 for 2 sodas, the 2 main dishes, and the 2 huge soups, you cant go wrong. There is easily enough left over for another meal. I'll go during dinner next time to see if the freshness improves at all. Nice service, casual feel - they just need to make food fresh daily.
As a side note, this is my first post here. Ive been a longtime reader, and have made a career of the food service world. I enjoy good food, fun times, and good wine (just spent last weekend takin' down "The Homewrecker" at Hillbilly Hotdogs across the border in WV. Ive enjoyed all the recommendations and "stay aways" the foodies on here have provided over the past few years, and I guess I just decided it was time to start contributing.
