Michael Ian Black wrote up a great commentary about it on his blog, about which I completely agree, particularly the following excerpts:
The overreaction to Conan’s departure has been kind of astounding; as a nation, are we really that concerned about who hosts “The Tonight Show,†a television program that stopped being culturally relevant around 1986?And let’s not forget, it’s not as if Conan was cancelled. He quit. He walked away from “The Tonight Show†because he rightly or wrongly felt that moving the show half an hour later would destroy the show’s integrity. Okay, fine. But let’s not act as if he’s leading a sit-in at a segregated lunch counter. It’s not that big a deal.
I think the deeper reason people are so inflamed by this petty war is that Conan in his own way has come to represent the aggrieved, the injured, the wrongly terminated. I think there is a sense in this country that giant corporations are ruining everything, even late night talk shows. Something so insignificant takes on greater importance because I think on some level, “The Tonight Show†actually has become a very flawed stand-in for all the jobs lost to corporate greed, arrogance, and stupidity. We see Conan as a victim because we feel as though, like us, he wasn’t given a fair shot. If a guy like that, a guy who has everything, can be downsized and demoted, what hope do the rest of us have?
i call bullshit on that blog.
O'brian walked away with $30 million.
he's not going to be getting his house foreclosed on anytime soon.

Read the blog... also, from the next post:
What’s frustrating is that Conan came to represent this hopelessness when he’s somebody who is as far from hopeless as could be imagined.
In completely unrelated news, Michael Ian Black is kind of a hottie.

Actually, I think that Conan stuck it to NBC for $30 mil for himself, then an additional $15mil for his cast and crew just kinda reinforces that..
I mean here's a guy who beat the system, not only for himself, but for the people who work under him.
Conan himself has been very gracious throughout this whole thing as well. In his closing speech, he thanked NBC for being his employer for most of his adult life and his fans for the outpouring of support. It's well worth finding on youtube and watching I think. It explains how Conan can come out as a bit of a "folk hero" in this affair. In short, he's been a class act throughout this episode, and people have responded to that.
My dad, who is not really a fan of Conan and in general is pretty cynical was impressed by the way Conan stood up for his cast and crew. That my dad found it notable enough to mention is very interesting.

MIB said that The Tonight Show isn't relevant anymore which is kind of true. I can stream TV shows from my computer any time of the day, whenever I want to. When I was little, I used to stay up to watch TV shows because you either saw them at the time slot or you didn't get to see them at all. We have a lot more media these days. The problem with Conan's time slot was he was competing with David Letterman and The Colbert Report which have the same vein of silly sarcastic comedy so they were all competing for the same core audience. Leno is boring as hell and that's more or less what people want as background noise to lull them asleep. Leno is predictable, mildly amusing, and white noise for most people who can't sleep. Conan is funny and the show engages you, so you are actually are more awake when you watch it. Conan at 12:35 worked because it was silly and when you were kind of out of it and haven't had much sleep it was hysterical.
Where's the love for Craig Ferguson?
Conan announces his 30-city comedy tour.
Sadly, the closest he comes to Columbus is Chicago.

Before and after the NBC mess, Ferguson is the only broadcast network late night show that I watch(ed). I don't miss a minute of his show.
If he doesn't get an Emmy soon, there is something wrong with the world. Jon Stewart is good, but he's not THAT good.
I've recently caught on to the Ferguson Fever. Omigod, this man is insane! I cannot wait to see his robot skeleton sidekick's debut next month.
Leno, in comparison to Conan, doesnt even approach funny.
Cant wait to see what Conan does next!
he's going on tour ;)
Conan O'Brien takes late night show to TBS
Oh, well. I don't have cable. Hulu, perhaps?
If Conan still has any desire to return to network TV, I think he would have to wait Letterman retires. Ferguson doesn't seem to care what time he's on as long as he has a show.
Conan O'Brien

Late-night television comedian Conan O'Brien appears in his first interview since having to give back his spot on the "Tonight Show" to Jay Leno. Steve Kroft reports:
