There are a ton of duplexes/whole houses for rent in Merion Village (just south of German Village) that seem large enough to meet your requirements. Most of the ones I know of are owner rented so are likely advertised on Craig's List over something like metro-rentals, but I own so I'm not sure really. It's a really nice area to live in since it's so close to things to do, but really quiet and friendly.

Good for Bruce; hell of a place

I know the OP has their square footage and greenspace requirements, but with a budget like that...if that's what you have available for housing costs? Rent a decent two bedroom in IV / Short North with half the square footage (I know you mentioned dogs...but if it's just you and another human, there are numerous parks and whatnot that could be the greenspace you're looking for.) Besides, these neighborhoods offer so much to do outside of your house that a ginormous amount of space seems...unneccesary? I understand you have what you want in mind, and I hope you find it, but honestly...1.5K-2K / month will give you a beautiful rental in the heart of any of those aforementioned neighborhoods with the space for communing with nature outside. Take the money you save on rent monthly, bank it and put it on a down payment! Just my 2¢.

Did you see this one?

Thank you for all your input! The sqft requirement is based on my rather large piano. Anything too much smaller would mean either watching TV while sitting on the piano bench or storing the piano until we buy. Neither of which is particularly appealing. As for the outside space I would love a small, fenced in yard but would be happy with a little patio or balcony. Just somewhere to sit outside, have a glass of wine and an occasional cigar.
While I understand that buying would afford me the opportunity to get exactly what I am looking for and likely for the same in a mortgage payment as the rent I am willing to pay (seen some GORGEOUS homes for sale in German Village), I am not willing to commit to a house until we have actually lived in Columbus and know we want to stay.
As for the UA discussion. I had to laugh. I'm sure it is a lovely place to live and I wouldn't exactly rule it out. The only people I have met in Columbus are people my husband will be working with and they all live there. They do not seem particularly snobby or racist BUT all the women were shocked that I <gasp> work and even more shocked when I said I don't play tennis and gave no interest in joining "the club" so I can play with them. Huh? I ski race in the winter and run in the summer with pick up soccer games to fill in the blanks. I want to be around an urban neighborhood, not an extension of a country club. Not saying at all that all of UA is like that, just my first impression...
@ Twixlen THANK YOU!!! Don't know how I missed that one! I just reached out to the owner. That place is awesome. Would have to rent sight unseen since there's no way I can get from Texas to the open house tomorrow but we'll see what they say.
Anyone know anything about the North Bank Condos? There's a unit there for rent that looks very promising but I know nothing about the building except what's on their website so of course it sounds great but...

^ I'd rather hit myself in the head with a shovel than live on campus or in student housing. The place on Buttles has potential, but it's clearly geared for students, and they've shown no pictures of the interior, which tells me it's likely a dump inside.
Really - it's a pita, but the best rental houses in places like VV or German Village are all signs in the yard, and usually not advertised. There was a 3 bedroom right on the park in German Village for rent last month that would have been perfect - it wasn't advertised anywhere that I saw, but I saw the sign in the yard.

So what brings you from Texas to Columbus? Is it just work, or are their other consideration as well? We have a bit of an unofficial rivalry with Austin (or is it just me who feels that way?) so would be nice to know what --if anything --we're doing right to lure people from that side of the country to this one.

This getting to know Columbus is probably why you are renting before you buy.

3 months after the fact and I never really said thank you for all the advice! As it turns out the people who suggested buying were absolutely correct so that's what we did. We got into town last weekend and are living in Flats on Vine until we settle on the house in VV next month. Loving this town!!! Anyway, wanted to check in and say thanks! Appreciated all the advice!
