Since the break up of 8-ball Tattoo years ago, I've had a difficult time finding equally talented artists in Columbus and wanted to get some recommends from CU'ers. Ideally, I'm looking for someone who is VERY creative (since I'm not at all) and good with color. Please don't recommend Durb - not a fan. Thanks!

@Anne - it was seeing that groupon that reminded me that I'd like to find an in-town artist! But I agree, might not be the best way to pick one.

Artistic Tattooing By Marty
Marty Holcomb is fantasticly creative. He has won many awards google him by that first line and you will get a ton of work from him.

If you do go to Artistic make sure it's Marty doing the tat and not his son.Posted 2 years ago # -

+1 about Kat. I have no body art but I know her and her work. She is an artist who cares about her craft.

Kat is excellent!
Durb also still tattoos. His work is some of my favorite in Columbus:

Durb is top of the list from my angle and he is still available for appointments.
Kat is amazing and i have been more and more impressed with both her fine art and tattoo's lately.
You will also find great work and artists at Soverign Collective, Stained Skin, Sweet baby octane, and Evolved. I really suggest checking out every portfolio that you can and trying to pick an artist that is good at the style you are looking to have done. For example if it was an intense color design with detailed outline I would go right to Durb, but if you wanted a black and grey portrait I would go right to Naryan at Stained Skin. However these are just who I think would execute those styles best. Make sure you think it through cause there is nothing worse than a bad tattoo.

Who did your work at 8-Ball? D. Willy who used to own 8-Ball has had a shop in Columbus for a few years now. I've known him for about a decade and he's done my wife's fine art reproduction tattoos.
It's upstairs in the building right across from the DQ on 5th.

@myliftkk, I'm not aware of a D. Willy who used to own 8-Ball. The 8-Ball Tattoo shop that I'm referring to was located on Indianola and was owned by Adam Gray. I was very familiar with Adam's work, as well as Dingwell and Chris Gay - all really great artists who have long since left Ohio.
@jon, durb is out for me. his work is good but..he's not my fav person in town and that's putting it midly.
@coreroc, I've looked at a lot of portfolios in town but haven't found anything that has jumped out at me as being really great. And don't worry, I'm well aware of the effects of bad tattooing :-) I thought maybe a post here would unveil an artist or shop I hadn't been made aware of yet. Haven't heard of sweet baby octane or Marty Holcomb so, that's something!

@AmyD - very cool and very fitting for you!

off topic, but i'm sure if you were at 8-ball, we ran into each other. i had the bookstore across the street, Joe Books.

@Amy, it's me...Helen! We worked together for a short time at a different place. I also came to your shop on arcadia the weekend it opened and bought an Apron for a friend. Back to the topic at hand - I'm really dying for some sleeve work & hope I can find an awesome artist without leaving the city. The artist is going to have to be a little funky though - no skulls or fish or birds for me....I'm talking glazed donuts, sushi and a variety of other food and drink items artistically jammed into an upper sleeve.

Mr Waitress has been going to Scott at Sovereign Collective (high st near bodega) who is really great. Scott created a 3/4 sleeve for a chef friend of ours with all sorts of food-related items and it is amazing. color is great, and he drew everything himself. i'll see if i can snap a picture tonight when i see him.

@lisa, I'd love to see a pic! Thanks for the tip on Scott.

At Soveirgn Collective (Short North Tattoo) There is a guy named Carey who's very good with color and very creative as well as kind, professional, and easy to work with. http://shortnorthtattoo.com/
