I agree with Shiller Park, but I'd go for the little bridge that goes over the pond, that'd make a great photo op.
I just hope for your sake she doesn't see the photographer that you got to follow you during the evening, I don't think 'stalker-w-camera' will make her in the mood to say yes.

Well, because of this thread, I was chosen last week to photograph a proposal for a guy who deployed to Afghanistan yesterday. We got together the day before the proposal and came up with a gameplan and some ideas for being in ultra stealth mode so he could make the proposal a complete surprise, and I have to say that everything went so wonderfully! It was truly a great experience to see the surprise on his girlfriend's face when he pulled out the ring, and to hear her squeals of delight while trying to shoot like mad without being heard or seen from my position across the way in a gigantic shrub.

Congrats!!! I just did the same thing back in June when I proposed to my fiancee in Madrid. The restaurant staff was in on my surprise and, unbeknownst to her, our sommolier was snapping photos from a window to the kitchen! It was the best thing ever (she thought she was opening a birthday present :). Best of luck!

Not to piss on anyone's parade, but does anyone else find this creepy? I think the memories you develop at that moment are strong enough to last a lifetime without photos. More power to you if it seems kosher with your S.O., but take into consideration whether you think they'd hate it.

I don't think it's creepy at all, being a photographer or not. The guy I shot for is getting ready to go into a war zone. I think that pictures of this are totally appropriate in this instance and not creepy in the least. Some people really value photography and capturing their memories to hand down for generations, as was stated to me in the thank-you note I received from his girlfriend yesterday. So, to each his own.

Just depends on the type of person you are. My fiancee and I are both very extroverted, so we had a blast with it (shared cocktails and a bottle of Cava with the waitstaff and some random patrons well into the evening to celebrate). I'm sure pck knows what he's doing.

joev, I didn't think you were calling ME creepy.
This just goes along with wedding pictures or any other photography of a memorable event, although I can see your point a bit about having someone hide in shrubbery or behind a bar (which I also did for them) taking pictures with one party being totally unaware.
I think, however, that what happens at the end of that - presenting the ring - wipes out all other thoughts of anything that came before it.
Obviously, though, you would not be one to spring this on!! hahaha

Super creepy. I'd never marry anyone who schemed behind my back to take photos during an important intimate moment when I was unaware I was being photographed. Do some women really like this kind of stuff?

No, I'd hate it. Not that engagement is something I have to contemplate ever again. But the collective mood here seemed to imply that this was a romantic, thoughtful thing to do - I'd hate to have someone sully that day when the S.O. finds out she/he has been photographed from afar and didn't like it. I mean - what if they were caught picking a wedgie or something?

Well, as a professional photographer, I can tell you that I would not photograph "picking a wedgie" and if I happened to catch it on accident, I certainly wouldn't provide it to the client! Geez.
Funny only the guys so far think it's creepy! But, hey, whatever. Not like anyone is making you do it!

Hmmm...maybe the distinction between creepy and not creepy turns on whether or not you're proposing in a public space where S.O. knows that there might be onlookers while the whole thing is going on. Your hidden photographer just happens to be another onlooker. On the other hand, a photographer popping up from behind your living room sofa in the middle of a candlelit dinner at home might be a little bizarre.

I think it is nice. I would have loved to have photos of when I was proposed to. The setting and the whole moment was just so beautiful. Sure it is great to think about in my head, but having a photo would be really special too.
Plus, I think you would know your SO well enough if you were proposing to know if they would be into that sort of thing anyway.

No, I'm having a fine day. I think there's a broader fetishization around engagement that's a little bit unsavory. The thought that you have to pay someone to hide in a bush and capture every moment in what should be a deeply personal and intimate experience doesn't sit well with me. Others may disagree, and that's fine. Photos after - when both parties are in the loop - seem appropriate. And while a lot of people know the person they're proposing to very well, others don't.
