I've always wanted to hire a photographer to hide in the distance and capture the moment when I finally pop the big question. It looks like that day will finally come in sometime in May. Does anyone know of a good spot in Columbus that would look great in spring and give us great pics? We love photos and I really want to capture her surprise. Ideally something outdoors that's not too crowded. Ideas?

Mirror Lake at OSU could be nice. That is really romantic of you. What fun. :)

Park of Roses during a week day, Franklin Park Conservatory, Schiller Park or Frank Fetch (both in German Village)
Congrats!

Being a wedding photographer, my first thought is, if I were photographing this, what location would be both beautiful and work so that I would be able to capture expressions but not be in the line of sight of your future betrothed?
If it's a park you're wanting, Goodale would be a good option because it's large enough to be able to avoid people, there are places to sit, and there are trees for the photographer to hide behind. Inniswood Gardens in Westerville fits that as well, although it's a little harder to avoid people there. Frank Fetch Park is nice and while there's nowhere really inside the small park for a photographer to hide, shooting from an adjacent property or across the street could be possible.
I'm sure there are lots of different ideas out there and, I know that if I were your photographer, it would be great fun brainstorming the best ones.
Sorry for the plug! I love weddings and when I see anything wedding-related, I just have to chime in!

Goodale also has that gazebo. Doesn't get much more romantic than that.

I love this topic! I just got proposed to this past December, and he did it at home, in front of the fire, while we listened to "our songs" and flipped through our dating photo album. Little did I know there was a video camera hidden on top of the refrigerator amongst the bags of chips! It caught the whole thing! :)
Take it from me--the more personal, the better. I would make it a place that is special to both of you. A place where you share memories, or a place that you both find breath-taking. Are you both in love with the city? Then I'd suggest North Bank Park. The views of the skyline are beautiful, and who doesn't love the water?
Blessings to you both!

The topiary garden behind the Downtown Library - beautiful.

how about at Market Blooms in the North Market. you could even work with them to hide the ring in a bouquet or something, and your photographer could be on the upper floor. Or behind someone else's stand.

Thanks for the replies everybody, these are all great suggestions so far. Keep them coming! I can't believe I've never been to Frank Fetch Park. Lake Hope is beautiful, but I'm trying to keep it in Columbus. I think I'm going to be scouting a lot of parks. :-) Karen, hiring a photographer is going to be the next step, your stuff is really stunning.

Topiary Garden, the garden at the Columbus Art Museum, Jeffrey Park Mansion in Bexley, Darby Park (there is a nice picnic table right on the creek here), The Zoo along the river, COSI outside with the downtown backdrop, Franklin Park has the two courtyards outdoors (the tulips bloom at the end of April), might see if her favorite band is coming through town.

Don't do anything stage-y. Go to a place where you both find meaning. If you're new to Columbus, but plan on staying, go to a place with a view of the city at night. Don't make it out of the ordinary... find some way to work it into a surprise.
If you've lived in Columbus awhile... go to the place where you first found her beautiful. And tell her it's so.
Closet romantic over here! Good luck. Have fun.

In Granville, there is a hotel, not the Buxton but the other hotel where there is a BEAUTIFUL fountain with tons of ferns, flowers and greenery around it...OMG so beautiful. Go to Cincy...Hyde Park area I cannot remember the name of the park but it is overlooking the city and beautiful.
