Hello - I have lived in the burbs ever since I moved to Columbus. Its time to move in the city. We are looking at a place in German Village, a few blocks north of the park. Anyone have any thoughts on this? Nice area? bad area? things to look out for or that I should know?

GV is a great place to call home. Having lived there myself for several years before moving downtown, it has always been a vibrant part of city with strong community involvement, access to restaurants, a beautiful park, and other amenities within walking distance.

No real personal experience, but GV is pretty nice. I love the Book Loft.
Depending on price and budget, some might suggest Schumacher Place and Merion Village as alternatives to GV. Just rode through a bit of Schumacher place and enjoyed it. Off of Whitter there is a nice Coney Dog place.

I lived in GV for about 5 years and loved it. (well a year or so was on Frederick St. which is more BD, but very close to GV).
You can walk lots of places.
And those two cute cupcake shops just opened!
A few blocks north of the park should be great.
We just moved from the corner of E.Sycamore and Fifth and the only thing that ever happened was having bike tires stolen.
I would just remember that you are in the city and to keep your stuff secure.

I've rented a house a few blocks north of Schiller in German Village for about 3 years. It's definitiely a safe area. Some people have petty theft problems, but if you're like me, your stuff isn't nice enough to be stolen or broken into. Aside from a bad neighbor a while back, we haven't had any trouble, and are really close to buying a house nearby.

GV is a great place to live... and your timing is great. It seems like GV (and downtown in general) really starts to "awake" when the weather gets nice!
A few blocks of the park is pretty good location... within close walking distances of most of main spots in the village. I live closer to the NW side of GV... and most of time I have a pretty good size walk to most places...Im alittle jealous :-).
As far as things to look out for...
Make sure you get a parking permit. GV ticket cops are very intense and will check at all hours.
Like most people said... you live in the city so don't ignore that. From my personal experience living in/near the village most my life... the closer you get to either Parsons Ave in the east or High St in west... the higher chance of crime activity. Most of the stuff ive ran into has been random car crimes. Crime is not a "major" factor in the village, compared to some inner-city neighborhoods, but it is definitely not ignorable.
Get to know all your neighbors. There are some great GV neighborhood groups, in addition to the larger Association, that throw parties/cookouts/gettogethers. I know of a pretty good one that is the houses on the NW corner of the park... and there are plenty of others!

when i moved to columbus i lived in german village, about 1 block from cup O joe on S Lazelle. Besides my fiance's car getting broken into a whopping 4 times, it was a great place to live.
I now live on Arcadia, Clintonville, and feel my $ goes further here and I enjoy the community more than I did in GV. (although you could at this point prob find better rent prices in GV than I could in 2002)
since you go to a lot of music events you might want to also look at ital vill, vic vill, short north and clintonville....

Both of our cross streets are not restricted to permit parking. So before you go through the trouble of getting a permit, check to make sure you need one. I live in a higher traffic area, and I've NEVER had a problem finding a parking spot within a block of my house.

If you've definitely narrowed your search to GV, I'd say, go for it. If you haven't, I'd put in a plug for looking around the other downtown areas too -- we initially felt strongly that we wanted to live in GV but ended up in Victorian Village instead because we found that the Short North had more of what we were looking for. We were also drawn to Old Town and looked around Italian Village... so I can see the attraction of most of the near-downtown neighborhoods.

German Village, I feel, is the most aesthetic downtown neighborhood (probably one of the most aesthetic neighborhoods in the USA.) It has many conveniences but lacks the vibrancy of the short north or the eclectic people of OTE. It personally isn't for me, but if you are looking for a more relaxing or quieter side of downtown, it would be my recommendation. It is very livable.

When I lived there, I found it was a great place to retreat to, very pedestrian friendly and very peaceful. It also felt pretty boring as far as nightlife goes.
Victorian Village (or NoFi ((north of fifth, trying to replace the Peach District)) is more my tastes as far as walking to nightlife goes. When I'm older and hate going out more, I would like to return to GV.
I like walking places though. If you don't mind a short drive/bike across downtown, then go for it.

Although some streets don't require them, I still would recommend getting it. Its only $25... its not that big of a hassle for a GV resident (since you can pick them up at the Whittier impound lot)...and the first time you park in the village out of your local area and forget to check...you get hit with a $33 dollar ticket.
I guess its fresh on my mind since my roommate just went through this scenerio. I recommended him getting one for my place... he decided to put it off since you dont need one for my street... and he forgot to pay attention to the signs one day last week...$33 ticket. $25 all year pass seems like a decent deal to him now.

thanks for the feedback! I think I will get a parking pass for sure, we went ahead and filled out an application for the place, keeping my fingers crossed.
There looks to be a few places to walk to and eat or drink which are good enough for me, yeah nightlife will be in other areas but this is much closer then the place I live now. And to be honest, I am a private quiet independent person so the hood seems perfect.
I also finally found a place with pub quiz after researching the area!!

I'm also a limited nightlife person, and really, the Short North isn't very far. There are even a couple of good places in the Brewery District, and Planks and Easy Street Cafe are great spots for a cheap pitcher of beer. MoJoe Lounge also just opened up right by me on 3rd Street.

G.V. is the prettiest neighborhood in the area and the best composed looks wise. But is really boring and I do not know anyone who lives there. I think the average resident is 87 years old. Lexuses are required too. The only time I go to G.V. is at night when MNR ends. I do not know what else occurs there. There is a Roosters there and lots of Lexuses and old people.
Its poorly connected to downtown because of President Eisenhower's freeway. But there is pedestrian bridge linking Downtown with Mohawk Street. When not displaying their Lexuses, German Villagers (aka geezers) like to collect antiques... notably antique houses in German Village where they can live out their boring Lexus filled lives amist the quaint brick streets and stable property values.
German Village used to be a nasty slum. My grandpa said he could have bought the whole area for $50,000 in 1960. But he did not and says he regrets it still today. There is a sausage house there too. I like sausages but really hate the idea of using a lot of oil, fertilizer, and land to grow corn to use more oil, fertilizer, and land to raise pigs and then have to murder them and cut out their guts and tear their flesh apart and use more oil and land to transport them to a kitchen so we can eat them. So yeah that Shmidt's is the end result of all that. Its on Kossuth, I am sure your grandma or mom will like eating their. I would like to try some of their sausage too. Maybe we can make a date of it eh?
German Village used to be called Der Ald Sud Ende or some German sounding crap like that. It was sort of a result of segregation like Mt Vernon was during the 1900's. Schiller Park is in German Village. It s a nice park, but they show boring Shakespear plays there for all the old farts residing in the houses near their Lexuses. Sometime MNR goes to Schiller and takes a break. I think Andre Cambern live in one of the houses along the park. My dad has a crush on her. She's too skinny for my taste, but I'd still do her. Other notable G.V. residents include former Mayor Greg Lushutka, Jack Hanna, Buster Douglas, and a kid named James that I met a few months ago.
I do not know that much crime occurs there, likely because the area is run my the Japanese mafia (Japan being aged nation where Lexuses are made). The Japanese mafia keeps the streets safe and clean through a practice of using nano-technology and free Sake. Sometimes MNR goes through G.V. and makes a lot of hoo-haa and racket! But I have never seen much crime in G.V. I once almost saw a street sweeper sweep a cyclist away in German Village. That was crazy!
In the winter the street crews plow the streets with tractors to uphold Cols. cowtown image. But the mayor demanded that the John Deere and International Harvestor logos on the tractors be removed and instead use BMW and Patagonia logos to attract and retain the young professionals. G.V. could certainly use some more YP's because everyone there is an old boring geezer. Maybe they should build climbing wall?
Nightlife in G.V. is non-existent. I'd say Obetz is a better bet for nightlife. There is a Roosters in G.V. that serves beer. I once went to Club 185 and had some beer. There is place called Major Woodys near G.V. that is the nightlife mecca of the south end.
G.V has a McDonalds, Wendys, White Castle, Taco Bell, Long John Silvers, Chipolte. It has better late night dining than the SN in fact. G.V. High St. is kind of like Brice Road or SAWMILL! Rd. in this way.
German Village has no streetcar service, but the 16 COTA can take you down to near the WalMart and Williams road where there a a shit ton of buffets.

As for nightlife, I'm a big fan of both 185 and the Beck Tavern. Definitely two different places with different vibes, but both a lot of fun.
If you like a quiet neighborhood with a lot of things to do within walking distance, then I can safely say you've made a good choice.
And I'll echo everyone who has already said it, you probably don't need a parking pass. Unless of course your new apt is on a street that requires a permit. If it isn't, you really really don't need one.
