Long Street Facebook Page

IÃ¢â‚¬â„¢m part of a group that is dedicated to bringing life to Long Street in downtown Columbus. There's already some great things happening on Long Street, including two universities, the historic Lincoln Theater, and numerous unique and interesting shops and restaurants. Unfortunately, the current design of the street itself is working against revitalization efforts. Long life proposes making Long Street a complete street.

Complete streets are designed and operated with all users in mind - pedestrians, bicyclists, motorists and transit riders of all ages and abilities. Making Long Street into a complete street can breathe much needed life into this area and help to stimulate economic development.

First off, let me just say that I like the name "Long Life". Chuckled a bit at first when I saw it, but it's a good one.

I agree that Long Street has a TON of potential, and converting to a two-way complete street would be the best way to accelerate development along that corridor and bring that potential to fruition.

The conversion to two-way idea has recently resurfaced during discussions about the 70/71 split and is being pushed hard by (I believe) the Long Street Businessmen's Association. I wouldn't be surprised if it's something positive to come out of the 70/71 split fix discussions.

Additionally, I think the "Creative Campus" component of the 2010 Downtown Strategic Plan would be a huge boost to development along Long Street, as long as the Creative Campus partners (CCAD, CSCC, State Auto, CMA, etc) are able to come together to work in a positive direction.

From what I've heard, New President David Harrison at CSCC is interested in being a good urban neighbor. I need to schedule and interview sometime soon, so if there's any related questions for him, let me know.

Last but not least (I'm just rambling at this point)... I think Neighborhood Launch has a lot of potential to be a good partner for development along Long. Their master plan (which is maybe 15% completed today) includes about two blocks of parking-lots-turned-condos facing Long:

Would be great to see that portion of the process pushed forward a bit quicker due to infrastructure investments.

Great idea for Long Street..another setback though, Columbus State is putting up a flat surface lot at Jefferson and Long where the old car dealership used to stand! UGGHHH!!

Long Street definitely needs some beautification improvements, making it more pedestrian friendly and connecting it to Cbus State.

This concept was mentioned before on CU, but I think would also be relevant with Long Street. The lack of human scale and pedestrian activity makes Long Street very daunting at the current time, but has potential as future projects are completed.

That is definitely part of the campaign! We want to extend the complete street from downtown to connect up with the King Lincoln District.

Yes, it's great to see they are renovating that old home instead of tearing it down (although they did tear down the building next to it).

I'm working with the 5XNW on a 5th Avenue tree-planting project, we're wrangling for some OEPA 319 grant monies to work some stormwater management into it.

I guess they don't make them with brick anymore. :(

It's nice that that home is being renovated. They don't make them like they used to.

The City planted some trees on 3rd Ave (part of Columbus, but often referred to as Grandview) a couple of years ago*. It was very nice, but may have been before 5XNW. It was a really nice thing for the City to do. I remember that all they asked was that we water the saplings. I would assume this would not be hard to implement on Long St.

*(COLUMBUS - TRI VILLAGE at that time).

Yeah, mostly it is just sheeting, if they are really cheap they will revert to insulbrick.

You know, Long St actually looks nice when driving east from SR 315. Then you make the curve into downtown, and well it goes downhill. I wish they could repave it and put some better lighting like they have on Gay St. Also take out the ugly railroad bridge, and if possible, create a bridge from the Arena District to Franklinton. I think it could spur some development in there.

EDIT: Or they could make the trains go underground at the train yard in the Brewery District and then have them go under Franklinton and come back up..... but maybe that would cost to much money. Make them look nicer and more pleasant to the eye, because now they are UGLY.

NL said that the bldgs on Grant (the Kasich-Taylor campaign/transition HQ, the former MadLab, and the building in-between those two) will be re-habbed, or torn down completely to make way for retail/commercial use.
