What is going on at the corner of Long and 17th? I think this building is the Charles or the Edna? They have caution tape around it. We have all seen this happen to often...I feel like the building is in bad shape.

Near East Side building slated for demolition
Friday, August 27, 2010
BY ROBERT VITALE
THE COLUMBUS DISPATCHAnother Near East Side building built, owned and operated by black residents of Columbus’ segregated past is slated for demolition.
City officials said yesterday that they’ve received an emergency order from their own Department of Building and Zoning Services to fix or raze the Charles Building at 905 E. Long St.
The city-owned building had been slated for a federally funded renovation by the Affordable Housing Trust for Columbus & Franklin County. But architects told the city it would cost $2.1 million to renovate the building and $1.5 million to tear it down and start over.

I like the part of the article where the city reps say how hard they worked to save the building, then the area commission president says "As if I believe that" and points out that the city has been guilty of demolition by neglect ever since buying the building in 2004. I wanted to call her up and cheer, except that the end result is still that a (THIRD) historically significant building is being torn down along East Long St. and the city is just shrugging its shoulders.

Wow, another building getting demolished on Long St. I really didn't expect to see another demo so soon. Any idea what other buildings on Long St the city owns that could be demolished?
Anyway, so who is building the new structure? Any word if CHP would be involved?

This is getting out of control in the near east side! If the city took control of the building over half a decade ago obviously they didnt care about saving the building that much. Something needs to be done to stop this in the neighborhood!

Will this be an eye opener to start saving buildings like The Edna just a half a block west??? Probably not!

What a mess..such a shame! Slowly the character of this neighborhood is dwindling away!

Spoken like a true non-resident.
There's plenty of "character" in a place like Zanzibar. And the building it's located in was only built a few years ago.
While I'm a big fan of historic preservation, the realist in me says that whatever replaces The Charles is just as likely to have the same amount of character.
I can only speak for myself, but the thing that I love about this neighborhood is that it contains a mix of old and new. If I wanted to live in a time capsule, I never would have left German Village. I'm looking forward to the day when Long Street rebounds as a blend of historic and modern architecture. I think it will provide for a more interesting dynamic rather than going the 100% historic route.

Well hopefully the King Lincoln District is able to have a renaissance that resembles what it was back in its glory days and not become something completely different and generic. I'm all for revamping a neighborhood, but you can't forget about community. Community is what gives a city character and identity. It's about time that we start developing more areas that offer specific and cohesive experiences.. At least in my opinion.
I imagine one day being able to go to the the KLD and eat at a nice Afro-Caribbean restaurant, then go hear some live music at the Lincoln Theater and follow that with some live poetry and a King Lincoln gallery hop.Posted 1 year ago # -

Im all about the use of mixing old with the new, but enough is enough with tearing down historic buildings. The city needs to have a plan before they tear something down only to sit as an empty grass lot filled with trash and empty beer cans for years. I see progross on the near east side but not when the city continues to tear down buildings!

You do not build up a neighborhood by tearing it down! I remember a time when quite a few buildings in the Short North were in the same condition as the Charles,Centenary Baptist or the Edna Building, with much less historical significance. They are all now vibrant homes or businesses ... I would also like to note how long it takes infill projects to happen.

Any bets on the next building?

Its a little to late for the historic retail buildings along Long Street. Theres just a handful left and I dont see anything happening in the new future, only more demolition! Would love to see The Charles restored!

I'm not sure what the condition the Charles was in but alot of structures go soo long without repair that they become dangerous and too costly to fix. You can't always blame the city for knocking down dangerous buildings. I just wish they knock down a few around me. What does it take to get a 72 hour demo order? The B&T maybe have some historical significants buts it's far beyond the point of saving or rehab.
