The 4th annual Local Foods Week will be taking place August 11th through 19th and there are a lot of great activities lined up. I'm volunteering with Local Matters to help with several of the events so I've seen how much time and effort have gone into making this a week that truly celebrates our vibrant local food scene. As with last year, there will be farmers festivals, food tours of restaurants that source locally, a grilled cheese throw down, a kids cook off, and a lot more. I pasted the basic schedule below - you can go to the Local Matters website to get full descriptions of the events!

Saturday, August 11

This year's Local Foods Week Grilled Cheese Throwdown will be taking place at Hills Market on August 11th and we're on a search for amateur contestants. If you think you've got the winning bread+cheese+special ingredient combination, shoot me an email at tsherry@local-matters.org and I'll send you more information about competing.

If you're selected as a contestant, all the bread and cheese will be provided by local vendors. Winners of the throwdown will be chosen based on the taste, creativity, and appearance of their sandwiches.

Last year, AmyJ from CU won! (Latitude 41 won the chefs competition.)

We just finalized our lineup of professional and amateur contestants for the Grilled Cheese Throwdown on August 11th. The rules are a bit different this year - the contestants will be assigned specific local breads and cheeses (a la Iron Chef). Beyond that, they'll be able to add whatever additional ingredients that they think can give them the winning edge. If you stop by the Throwdown a(t the Hills Market Fest), you can decide for yourself which you think is best. :)

Also, there are still tickets left for the local food tours offered by Columbus Food Adventures. They'll be taking place on August 14th, 15th, and 16th and will involve sampling locally-sourced dishes at some of Columbus's top farm-to-table restaurants (including Knead, Latitude 41, Till, and Brothers Drake). They sold out pretty quickly last year so get your tickets soon if you're interested!

Local Foods Family Day at COSI presented by Chipotle (12-4pm) — COSI

Chipotle, whose corporate offices in Denver, CO oversee "more than 900 restaurants" seems to me to be the antithesis of what Local Food week is trying to accomplish.

But perhaps that is just me.

Went on my third annual Columbus Food Adventures Local Food Tour - and it was fantastic as always. The surprises were That Food Truck - really, really good food (pork belly lettuce wrap) and the Brother's Drake Mead tour. I'd had their mead before, and thought it was OK... nothing I was overly crazy about, but OK. I now realize I must have had really young mead - or it was when they were just starting out - because I loved what I had last night. The Wild Ohio was a particular stand out and I *loved* hearing about the passion that goes into making the product.

Brothers Drake makes some great meads. I'm a fan of the Wild Ohio myself. If you had it at the meadery, it definitely makes a difference if you have it on the draft system. I really dig that some of the local restaurants are including on their taps. I've seen it recently at Double Happiness and Natalie's. When you meet with Eric, Oron and Sarah, the passion really comes through them and their products.

Eric from Brothers Drake will be at House Wine tonight with all the meads, plus CBC, Ferrante, Firelands and CaJohn's. A little salsa sampling after Bodhi Double IPA, anyone?
