Developer outlines plans for $300M retail project

WEST CHESTER TWP. - When a $300 million retail development set to open in 2014 at the Liberty Way Interchange is complete, it will greatly improve not only the surrounding communities, but Southwest Ohio, according to its developer. “We improve the quality of life,” said Yaromir Steiner, founder and chief executive officer of Columbus-based Steiner + Associates. “The project becomes the heart and soul of the community by improving the desirability of surrounding areas and the ability to attract and retain businesses.”

Yaromir said he plans to begin construction on the retail development in about a year. The project will include departments stores, movie theaters, public space and gathering areas, office space and housing. It is expected to include 3,000 construction jobs and about 4,500 permanent jobs.

I like how their apts and offices appear to be more incorporated with the mall, unlike Easton who's apts and especially offices are basically a complete separation of uses. I wish Easton could feel more like a town than a Disneyland mall.

Hopefully this doesnt pull away from the great shopping downtown Cincinnati has..I love going to Saks and Macys while visiting.

I think Steiner is learning as they develop more of these types of products. The Greene in Beavercreek has apartments overlooking the main square and there are 2nd story offices scattered about. Even with this mix, the development still feels disneyesque because they are usually separated from the existing community by large roads and there are generally two or three roads into the development. It's not like a typical, organically evolved town with multiple streets and alleys providing access. Still better than the Polaris model!

I thought the integration of apartments and retail was one of the selling points of the Continent which in itself was a poor copy of Disneyland.

New retail centers *always* have an impact on other nearby competitors. I'm sure every Cincinnati shopping center was cringing at this news. The question is how much it will impact their sales over time. I'm with you though in hoping it won't shutter any of their Downtown stores.

I'm also wondering how much of an impact this will have on Easton itself. There are many shoppers who will travel from outside the main metro area to visit Easton. If you live somewhere like Chillecothe and are a fan of Easton, this new development might pull you in that direction next time you want to make that trip.

The hard work will be attracting Easton calibre stores. Build it and they will come is no longer a mantra in a world where retailers are cutting back. Easton has a very unique portfolio.

While a lot of the unique stores at Easton may not be rushing to open a second regional location in Central Ohio, I don't think it's too far fetched for them to consider a Cincinnati location if they don't already have one.
