Any thoughts on a hotel to stay at?
I have read about the Farmer's Daughter and Custom hotel. I have also read that LA is not very walkable
Not looking for a five star but cool digs would be nice

No LA is not very walkable. In your hotel room you have to take go-karts between the bathroom, bedroom, closet, lobby, ice machine and so on. I do know that LA has a sucessful film industry.
LA covers a big area. Can you be more specific?
There are plenty of sub-areas which are walkable.

If you want walkability try staying in Los Feliz or Santa Monica. Pasadena is also great, super walkable and only a few minutes out of the city.
LA is walkable in the same sense that NYC is walkable. Will everything be 3 blocks away, no, but if you start in a good location you can do a lot within few miles. Farmer's Daughter is cool and a good choice if you are looking to do quite a bit without a car. For anything else (nightlife, restuarants, etc.), just cab it from the hotel.
I'm so jealous!! Have fun!!
I would stay in Santa Monica, it is very walkable there. If you really want to be in the middle of it, stay in a hotel on Sunset. I think the W is in a good location. Avoid the Valley for hotels, the Valley is great to live in but most of the things you will be doing are probably over the hill. Plus, driving in L.A. blows.
Santa Monica would be my #1 spot which is why I asked since if you have to be in Orange Co or Bernadino, it isn't a good spot.

What's wrong with Orange County?

Nothing. But if I had to be be in the OC (he heh he), I wouldn't stay in Santa Monica.

if i had to be in orange county, i would commute from Tijuana... seriously... i used to think ohio was strip-mall city, but that's all there is to orange county, imho. well... the irvine spectrum tries to be like easton or something... but all in all, i could give two shits about that whole megalopolis...
edit: you can't go wrong with a courtyard marriott or a residence inn

Awwww, Thom. I used to like you a lot until you trashed my old home :(
Irvine Spectrum can't "try to be like Easton" because it's older than Easton, silly. Not that I'm trying to defend The Irvine Company which I think sucks the soul out of anything it touches, I'm just trying to say it came first, lol.
Yes, there are lots of strip malls, but there are also incredible places like Fashion Island and South Coast Plaza. Oh how I miss good shopping!!
And as far as that being all there is to OC, booo. Give me 48 hours and I'd show you the time of your life :)
three years ago, i mean, i was stuck on a business trip (at the residence inn!!! highly recommend, btw)..i drove from long beach to dana point on the pch, and then same thing inland a bit, and i could only find *one* non-chain coffee shop and they didn't even have like a alive-ish type magazine... the told me "house parties" ... and i needed that like i needed another coke head telling me how great jazz is... ... so i just went back to the residence inn and recorded a song about it for a podcast... and then got my oranges out of the mini fridge, grabbed a plate, and plopped down on the couch for some CSPAN...
but i think you're right... the shopping is indeed amazing.
Awwww, well that makes me sad. OC Weekly is the other paper of Orange County just in case you ever have to go back  Most of OC is homogenous and over-commercialized, just like the rest of the country, but as with any city there are the locals only spots like we have and that's where you get to the heart of the area. The trick is knowing ahead of time or finding the right person that can steer you correctly.
EDIT: Love the song
no, yes, that's very true.
i think i did see that magazine, and it had a lot of cool things in it, actually, come to think of it, maybe just nothing i was particularly interested in ? i dunno... i'm fickle. c.i.p cspan. i think larry lessig was on.
but that's what i did, the courtyard marriott, and residence inn, this was over several weeks and it was very centrally located, absolutely no suprises or extra fishy costs, and everything was spic and span. but maybe that's just the traveling business idiot perspective. i wish i had something more bohemian to offer, that has worked out great for me in several other places, very cheap, full-on culture in the thick of things, and i dunno where to look, in LA, really, honestly...
wait! i remember... huntington beach... very cool, very walkable... great shops, seafood, not sure where to stay, but in my opinion, and beating a dead horse, maybe, that place is hip... go to the pier.
oh! and dana point... cool shops there, and along the pch in general. some parts in the more downtown centers along the pch are somewhat walkable.
I stayed in a B&B in Long Beach for pretty cheap. Plus I think it was open wine/beer outta their fridge. It was easy going and nice peoples.

Def. check out Huntington Beach. I showed my Midwestern pride with some honkey straight outta winter whitey skin. I enjoyed it. Going down PCH is a nice drive in a rental car.
Thanks guys
There is a place I like to stay at Venice Beach. It has a kitchen, fridge, rooftop patio, grill and the Venice scene is very cool. Not too pricey either, especially for L.A.
I know you aren't looking for crazy expensive hotels... but I have to mention the Mondrian. A friend of mine stayed there, and she really really liked it. The hotel itself is an experience.
Or the Chateau Marmont :) A couple of my friends splash out, and stay there when they go to LA. The one nice thing about the Chateau is that if you want reservations to any clubs or anything like that, the concierges there can usually arrange to get you "on a list", so to speak. Or point you in the right direction for hipster places to eat and socialize.
Either of the Standards would be great for you http://www.standardhotels.com/los-angeles/
