Description and Benefits: The provision of a bike lanes on King Ave would support the ongoing development of the bicycle as an important transportation mode in the City's overall transportation mix. This proposed project would help connect Grandview Avenue and the Fifth by Northwest neighborhood with Olentangy River Road, Ohio State University, and the Victorian Village neighborhood. Existing on-street parking is being converted to a bike lane.

that seems like a decent spot for bike lanes, as the west-bound side of King is sized kind of oddly- it's almost like there's room for two car lanes (a la 5th in some sections) but not really quite enough room. you can even see it in the 'before' picture in that .gif. the cars are kinda staggered.

Seems like a perfect place for this. I also would like to see it continue to High St, but I am not sure how feasible that would be.

I imagine they will be doing a similar thing on Third Ave from Olentangy to Grandview Ave.

Most likely. King Avenue might be better just because very few cars use the street for parking. I think a few more cars use the street for parking on 3rd. Maybe they can just do one bike lane and use the other side for on street parking. I don't really see the need for two bike lanes.

I think it would be weird to have bicycles headed in the opposite direction of street traffic (even if in a special lane), but I am not really a biker.

There's apartments on that stretch of King. Usually at least a few cars parked there.

I don't follow your logic. Why would you put a bike lane on one side of the street and not the other? People only ride in the one direction? If the bike lane isn't necessary in one lane, why would it be needed in the other?

I was just suggesting that if they wanted to keep the on-street parking on 3rd Ave, they could just use one side of the street for a bike lane. I would be comfortable riding my bike going with or against traffic as long as the path was well marked with reflectors and striping. However, certainly a bike lane on both sides is preferred.

There has to be some sort of concrete paver/spike/reflector thing that could be placed between the bike path and the road to at least discourage cars from coming close to the bike lanes and is easy/cheap to install.

Is it just me or does the implementation of our bike infrastructure seem very piecemeal. I would like to see some sort of "grand plan" drawn out for bike infrastructure expectations over the next 10 years.

^^ Those one lane, both way lanes would certainly work here.

As someone who cycles everyday, bike lanes like those proposed are really poor. It makes drivers feel they are separate when in reality they are not.

For similar investment, we could do the following. A curb could be installed near the white buffer for further safety in the future.

No idea if the master plan is actually utilized in the process of choosing where to install lanes, etc. but it does exist.

This approach might work on King Ave from the river to High St since it would allow for parking on one side. It would also be a great east/west connector to the Olentangy bike way.

I don't think it's necessary to have a physical buffer between the cars and bikes. How is someone supposed to make a left hand turn? You have to get out into traffic.

We're using a minimum 3' buffer in Chicago for protected bike lanes. 1' seems a little too close for comfort for me, especially between the 10' minimum width car travel lanes and the 4-9" sub-standard width bike lanes.

Definitely one of the down sides. You have to make two-stage turns, sometimes called Copenhagen lefts.

I was thinking more along the lines of tires, filled with concrete, spaced every 10 feet or so to create a buffer, but allow cars to still get to their driveways, etc (but obviously something more attractive than a tire filled with concrete :)

Placing both bike lanes on one side of the street doesn't solve anything in this scenario - King is only 30'-6" wide. You either have bike lanes or on-street parking. If the City is going to eliminate on-street parking on this stretch of King, I would rather have bike lanes on both sides of the street.
