Overall, the skyline of Cleveland is ranked (based upon existing and under construction buildings over 500 feet (152 m) tall) 5th in the Midwestern United States (after Chicago, Minneapolis, Detroit and Columbus) and 20th in the United States, after New York City, Chicago, Miami, Houston, Los Angeles, Dallas, Atlanta, San Francisco, Boston, Las Vegas, Seattle, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Jersey City, Minneapolis, Denver, Detroit, Charlotte and Columbus.[A]
New York has 206 existing and under construction buildings over 500 ft (152 m), Chicago has 107, Miami has 37, Houston has 30, Los Angeles has 22, Dallas has 19, Atlanta has 19, San Francisco has 18, Las Vegas has 17, Boston has 16, Seattle has 12, Philadelphia has 10, Pittsburgh has 10, Jersey City has 9, Minneapolis has 9, Denver has 8, Detroit has 7, Charlotte has 6 and Columbus has 5. I'm curious, where does Cincinnati fall in that list? Seems to me there are way more skyscrapers there than in Columbus.

The cut off is at 500 feet and Cicy only has one over 500 feet. Cols. has at least five I can think of. Rhodes, LeVeque, Hunington, Riffe, and Nationwide I.

Hmm, guess I never realized how much shorter all the Cincinnati buildings are. They're bunched a lot closer together, making the downtown feel more filled out, I think. But I'm biased because I grew up there.

good point. the downside of skyscrapers is the vacancy left on the ground below.
actually, another big reason that downtown cincy, and cleve for that matter, feels more filled out downtown than cols is that they are just smaller geographically i.e. cols downtown is just too big! i remember the riverfront consultant a few years ago gave presentation in which he showed on an overhead scale pictures of what is generally considered downtown cols, cincy, and cleve. downtown cincy and cleve together fit inside downtown cols!

On a related note, has anyone ever heard what happened to the Capitol Tower Place proposal? I posted about it on another thread here. It would have been 614 feet (42 stories) adjacent to the Capitol on S 3rd St. A joint venture between Dispatch Printing and the Galbreath Co. would have been completed in 1990. I was new to the area then and I'm assuming it was shut down at least a couple years prior. Just wondering why?

Considering that the Dispatch was involved and their own considerably older and smaller building is right there on S. 3rd St. across from the Capitol (which does include a mid-sized surface parking lot), I'm thinking that would be the obvious candidate. The combination of the old building and parking lot would have approximately the same size footprint as Rhodes.

I heard or read somewhere that the Rhodes Tower was supposed to be 150 feet taller than it currently is! But the state, at the last second, decided to "lop off" that extra 150 feet, giving the Rhodes Tower its current height. If they hadn't done that, the Rhodes Tower would be the second or third tallest building in the state!
Also, does anyone else think that Columbus does have a pretty impressive skyline? Coming into the city on 315 South, 71 North from Grove City, 670 East from Grandview Heights, 70 East from Hilliard and the West Side. Very impressive indeed, in my opinion!!!

I'm sure everyone here has thought that at least once. But when you see it every day, the impressiveness fades. Just as it would in any city.

One of the best views from a little out is on the Taylor Station road bridge over some tracks out by Blacklick and behind the Lucent compound out east.

It's pretty cool coming down 670 from the east side after work. Sometimes the sunsets just right behind the skyline and it looks damn cool.

Also a sweet view 15+ miles out of downtown to the SE from Marcy, Ohio. It is a nice bike ride too, that is how I discovered it. It really worth it on a clear day.

I'm probably in the minority here, but I really don't like skyscrapers. Nothing makes a city feel more alien to me that towering buildings blocking out the sunlight. Manhattan is not a place I'd want to live.
I love cities designed on a human scale. London, Paris, Washington, D.C. Few buildings are more than 10 stories, and most are less than five, yet all a vibrant places. I'm happy with Columbus' skyline. It is nicely balanced and there is plenty of breathing room.

Madrid was packed with people, but buildings were only 5 stories tops. Of course, away from the center they are building a cluster of skyscrapers, but I didn't notice any from where I was. Hell, High St in Downtown was wall to wall 3-4 story mixed-use buildings when it was at it's best.

Yeah, I like DC alot too. They were able to avoid the post-war "upward" build because there is a local ordinance that there can be no structure taller than the Capitol. The result is a lot of human-scale spaces and neighborhoods.

Anyone driving from the Airport into Downtown (getting off 670 to the Third Street exit) has a very nice view.
