“Nicosia has given Lu Anne voice and made her visible, and she’s extraordinary. No wonder both Kerouac and Cassady loved her.” – Russell Banks
Gerald Nicosia received his B.A. in 1971 and M.A. in 1973 at the University of Illinois, Chicago Circle, and went on to win acclaim for his biography of Jack Kerouac, Memory Babe, published by Grove Press in 1983. Since that time, he has published several other books, including an award-winning history of Vietnam veterans after the war, called Home to War, several volumes of poetry, and hundreds of articles in major newspapers such as the Washington Post, Los Angeles Times, Chicago Tribune, and San Francisco Chronicle. His newest book was born out of his work as an advisor to the movie of On the Road, which began filming in Montreal in the summer of 2010. While coaching Kristen Stewart in the role of “Marylou,” he discovered an 8-hour taped interview he had made with the late Lu Anne Henderson, the real-life Marylou, in 1978; and subsequent work with Lu Anne’s daughter Anne Marie Santos fleshed out the full life story of this remarkable woman.
