For a decade, people flocked to the Comin' Home Festival on the Near East Side to celebrate the historic neighborhood. A revived version of it is intended to bring back some of that neighborhood pride this weekend.

But the planning and logistics of the Keepin' Comin' Home Unity Day Festival, being held Saturday and Sunday, has some in the neighborhood worried that the event will inconvenience residents living near the festival site.

Organizers have a permit to close Mount Vernon Avenue from Monroe Avenue to Mayme Moore Place from 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. both days. The event will run from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Events also will be held in Mayme Moore Park.

I think this community deserves to have a great event! I look forward to participating. It is small enough and confined to specific areas, so the residents shouldn't be too worried. Any word on what vendors are participating?

I haven't heard. We cruised by a bit ago on our way to Creole Kitchen for lunch, but it didn't look like they were setting up yet in the park. Will probably go walk around for awhile and check it out tomorrow since it's right around the corner. :D

Anne & I walked over for a late lunch today. Quite a few people out despite the hot hot weather. The musicians playing in the gazebo at the time were great, but over near where we got some food, one of the booths were blasting out some heavily distorted "It wasn't me" by Shaggy. I couldn't help but laugh every time the lines "we were both butt naked, banging on the bathroom floor" rang out, as there were a lot of little kids around. Sigh.

Anyway, we got some delicious beef brisket sandwiches and fries to go. It was way too hot out for us to sit and eat there. Most of the good shady spots under the trees were already taken. I imagine it will be a much better experience after the sun starts to set and it gets a little cooler out.

We keep our windows open in the summer though, so it's always great to be able to have good live music drifting into the house all weekend long. :D

The Dispatch wrote Crowds slow to return to Comin' Home festival

    Saturday, August 2, 2008 3:41 PM

    BY MONIQUE CURET

The Comin' Home Festival got off to a slow start this afternoon, but organizers were hopeful the crowd would increase as the day wore on.

In early afternoon, fewer than 100 people were gathered on Mount Vernon Avenue on the Near East Side. About 15 booths were set up along the blocked-off roadway.

The festival is being revived after a hiatus of several years. It was held each year from 1988 to '98 and drew thousands of people, but Comin' Home was marred by neighbor complaints about festival-goers' behavior.

The revived Comin' Home will be held until 9 p.m. tonight and from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. tomorrow on Mount Vernon Avenue from Monroe Avenue to Mayme Moore Place.

"It's going to get crowded later," said Barry Edney, festival coordinator. As he walked through Mayme Moore Park, where some of the festival events are taking place, a woman called to him, "They'll be out here after 3 o'clock!"
