I don't see how they can revive this franchise without Pat Morita.

Can Seth Rogen be in it?
What the hell, can't movie folks poo out an original idea?
While I love the original Karate Kid...are we really that attached to Ralph Macchio?!?

No. Elisabeth Shue and Pat Morita; a resounding yes.

Absolutely agree there, I suppose...particularly Shue :D
I thought the link was funny. I don't think Karate Kid is that important or sacred to film. I, in general, think remakes suck and agree that it is ridiculous new ideas cannot be generated. But as for Karate Kid, feh.

1+ to that for sure. Its real sad when the writers can't come up with new stuff. It's a peeve of mine. I mean sure some remakes work but they push it a bit far I mean really they do. They want more money but can't think of anything original ?
as long as someone yells "put him in a body bag"... no wait, even then this is sickening.
I guess I don't understand why they have to do a remake....I mean they could just do a similar movie (under dog learns karate from old Japanese guy) and not have it be the same characters and story.
Hopefully this kid turns out to have more acting talent than his dad, but I doubt it. Whatever happened to actors having to be talented to be in movies? I guess the same thing that happened to people having to have talent to make records.

Will Smith has better chops than most people think, he was excellent in Six Degrees of Separation.
I dunno. Every Will Smith movie I've seen he's played pretty much the same character. One part smooth charismatic dude, one part ladies/family man, one part bad ass quipping one-liners made for the trailers and/or action figures.
Then again, I never did see Ali or The Pursuit of Happiness, which seem like they might require him to act a little differently. ;)

Six Degrees of Separation, he plays a gay hustler who insinuates himself into rich people's lives pretending to be the son of Sidney Poitier after sleeping with one of their sons...
It's a bit of a departure LOL!
I will have to take your word for it and watch Six Degrees sometime, but I have seen Ali and Pursuit of Happyness and neither made me think differently of Will Smith. I think his character is always "Will Smith playing X character", I've never seen him really embody a character. He's not the worst actor I've ever seen, but he's no Edward Norton.
Jackie Chan is playing Miyagi.

Ug, I just read this. When you thought it couldn't get any worse.
Argh. Jackie Chan? He's not Japanese, nor is he known for karate. Is there a shortage of Japanese actors out there, that anyone that looks asian will do? Besides, you can't really replace Pat Morita for that part.
It shouldn't be a remake.
