JobsOhio identifies target fields for growth

CINCINNATI — Ohio’s new, private economic-development agency is betting on energy, autos, agriculture and planes to help lead the state’s turnaround. Executives of JobsOhio laid out their strategy — focusing on those industries and others — to its board for the first time yesterday, fully aware that there’s work to do in a state that has battled economic decline for years.

“It’s absolutely a strategy that we’ll be pursuing,” said Kristi Tanner, chief operating officer of JobsOhio and general manager in charge of recruiting automotive, aerospace and aviation companies to the Buckeye State. Tanner told the JobsOhio board last week that Ohio could become the reshoring capital thanks to rising labor costs in China, supply-chain disruptions in Japan and currency inflation in other parts of the world.

JobsOhio foes argue they have right to sue

As JobsOhio inches closer to becoming the state’s primary economic-development agency, judges are still considering a thorny legal question: Can anyone sue to stop it? Opponents told the Franklin County Court of Appeals yesterday that they should be able to challenge the constitutionality of Gov. John Kasich’s new private entity.

DeWine calls for tweaking JobsOhio

Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine worries that other agencies’ public records could be converted into state secrets simply by being shared with JobsOhio. DeWine will ask legislators and the administration of Gov. John Kasich to change a bill passed yesterday by the House to ensure that public records remain available to the public.

JobsOhio office is open for ideas

The view from the JobsOhio lobby is an aerial of the Statehouse — a breathtaking scene from the 15th floor of the Huntington Center. It’s a not-so-subtle reminder of the emphasis Gov. John Kasich has placed on economic development. Glance down the hall, and the walls are draped in flat-screen TVs and state maps, each with a different story to tell of a major Ohio city or sector of the economy.

JobsOhio touts 5,500 more jobs for state in 1Q

FORTUNE -- Mark Kvamme has this crowd rapt, and he isn't even speaking. We're in a cavernous Italian restaurant called Mr. Anthony's on the outskirts of Youngstown, Ohio, and the lunchtime audience is filled with members of the local chamber of commerce. He has just told the story of how as a consultant back in 1997, he advised Steve Jobs to try narrating Apple's iconic "Think Different" television ad. While he plays a recording of Jobs toasting "the crazy ones" over an orchestral swell, Kvamme, eyes downcast, looks prayerful. The clip ends, and he snaps to attention. "Let's be crazy!" he concludes. "Let's change things here in Ohio!"

that has been an issue at all levels of govt for a long time, standing to sue

you can't always sue the govt and the courts cannot force the other branches to obey the law

JobsOhio leader ready to take action on $500 million deal

The deal that would give the state’s coffers $500 million and shift liquor profits to JobsOhio for economic development should be completed by year’s end, JobsOhio chief Mark Kvamme said yesterday. A transaction that would shift control of the state’s liquor profits to Gov. John Kasich’s privatized development agency has been on hold for months as various legal challenges were filed by Democrats and a liberal policy group.

New jobs entity files complaint in high court

COLUMBUS — Ohio officials hope a complaint filed Friday in the state’s highest court could help resolve legal concerns about a new private job-creation entity and clear the way for the agency to get rights to the state liquor business and use the profits. The budget and commerce departments had agreed to transfer those rights to JobsOhio for 25 years in a deal worth as much as $1.4 billion for the state, which gets the first $500 million when the transfer occurs.
