It would be nice. I personally would like some kind of electronics store that had a larger variety of electronics that I could look at before I purchased them online. ;)
Imho, I would really like a Best Buy to go into the Grandview Yard. I know this may not sound popular but there is easy free parking there and close proximity to the central core which is very under-served in the electronics department. With all those people including OSU I am surprised one was not built at Lennox.
But yes! an Apple Store would probably do well in the SN.
Since there was that shooting outside of the Apple Store at Easton, I have been afraid to go back to that part of town...

Yes! This would be awesome! Shady Side is a urban neighborhood in Pittsburgh and they have an apple store. http://www.apple.com/retail/shadyside/

I'd love to see it, but it doesn't seem to fit at all with their site selection criteria.

It's not an Apple Store, and it's not in the short north/downtown, but it's closer than Easton or Polaris...

I am not sure how accurate this is, but this is some info on how Apple chooses locations:

I would love to have an Apple store, or a Trader Joes, etc. downtown or in the short north - but it won't happen anytime soon. Those stores gravitate towards higher income areas. People living in the city will drive to the suburbs to shop but it doesn't work the other way around and those national chains know it. I've also heard the rumors of a Best Buy at Grandview Yard, that would be great.

It's called the gift shop at the Wex. While you're there, buy an Eames chair or check out their current exhibition.

Honestly, that store just looks totally out of place. Just think of the foot traffic this store could create for the neighborhood. Talk about additional exposure. As far as incomes go, I don't think the area would have any trouble supporting an Apple store. Incomes within downtown and the immediate core are pretty high these days.

but the question you should ask is not whether the Short North or Campus can support an Apple store (which I agree probably they probably could), but whether that is the best place in Columbus from Apple's perspective to put another Apple store.
I'm going to guess it's not.
I could see one eventually going in Grandview Yard depending on what anchor tenants move in there. But other than that I don't envision them adding any more Columbus stores in the near future. Kingsdale perhaps.
Certainly I'd love to be wrong and see them downtown. But not the end of the world, If Apple did move in I'm sure they'd attract other national chains and drive up the area's rent.
I like having the Short north a place for indies anyway. :)Posted 9 months ago # -
As an Apple phone/computer user, I'd love to see it.
My question is whether or not they're looking to expand with another store in our region at this point in time. They've got the store at Easton, and another opened last year at Polaris.
Are they ready for another?
Personally, I'd almost rather see a mini-Microcenter Downtown. ;)
And most realistically, I'm envisioning a Best Buy opening at Grandview Yard within the next 5-8 years.

The customers are here...large chains just have to notice a trend coming back to downtown and the inner city neighborhoods which shows people moving back. I would say within a 7 mile radious there are probably 75,000 to 100,000 people who could potentially use an Apple store in the short north. Think about students on campus being so close and taking the number 2 just 5 minutes south.

I was not aware of the Polaris store. Knowing that, it MAY be overkill to have a third location, for now at least.
Best Buy. If you're listening. Grandview Yard please.

I think large chains are aware of the demographics of the inner city... and from their perspective, it's better to have a suburban store that inner city folks (with expendable income) will drive to, rather than an urban store that suburban folks won't drive to. Generally speaking of course.
Chains will follow the independents once a certain critical mass is reached.
If we want to see a stronger retail presence Downtown, then we need to work with the independents first.

Appears Apple may be changing its site selection strategy a bit and while a Short North store may not necessarily be in the cards it looks like an official OSU campus one could be down the road.

assuming this is their new direction, Campus gateway springs to mind...

Personally, I would prefer to not necessarily see it in the Short North so much as I think we have really lost the 'Gallery' district feel of the place. I am referring to the independent, creative stores that you really can't find anywhere else in the city... it's almost all restaurants and bars now (not that I don't like those too)...
that being said, although the Wexner Center bookstore has the product, it really isn't visible at all to passers by and I really do think an Apple store would be great on High St. in the South Campus gateway buildings. Think about the business it would generate on move-in week with parents trying to get their kids set-up for school. Yes, it sucks we now have another at Polaris, so we may be out of luck for now!

The Gateway makes sense as it mixes both student and SN traffic. I think it would be a smart location.

As someone contemplating a new apple laptop purchase... I have to say that buying online seems like the best option.

I also think the Apple store offers a lot of other perks to Apple owners besides being just a point of sale.

There's been very little significant change in the ratio of bar/restaurants vs non-bar/restaurants business in the SN for a while now.
Just because people talk about bars/restaurants incessantly doesn't mean they're taking over the entire district. But, more people eat and drink than buy art, that's a fact.
