I am going to Cincinnati next week and plan to visit Jungle Jim's for the first time. Would any of you like to share your recommendations, caveats, stories etc. about the store? Thanks in advance.

I'm always a fan of the big wall o' hot sauce.

My friend grew up in the trailer park behind it (and had a lot of friends who worked there in high school). You could hear the jungle sounds emanating from the fake animals that sit out front all of the time. It's an interesting place and always has been.
I love there beer selection and the growlers of local stuff that they sell in their beer cave
The wine selection is good too, also if your there at the right time there sometimes are enough free samples out to make a pretty good afternoon snack.Posted 1 year ago # -

Walking into the restrooms for the first time was the closest I've ever come to experiencing the TARDIS.
They have a pretty good olive bar near the front. I always fill one of the larger containers with any olives that look interesting.
As good as the food is, I'm a bigger fan of the old animatronics scattered throughout the store. I'm personally fond of the cereal mascot band, but Robin Hood is a close second.

I made a road trip down there just for jungle jims.
Make sure you give yourself enough time. I spent about 2 hours in there. The meats are pretty good. Also liked the candy from other countries.

If you are sampling hot sauces and one says EXTREMELY HOT... it is. Trust me.
Place is great, I recommend bringing a cooler so you can bring Fish, cheese, perishables back with you.

in the "Sweden" section there may be chocolate covered banana treats that taste nothing like chocolate or banana... I have never seen so many people get a look on their face like I hurt their souls as when I shared this food monstrosity at a party.

If you are going on a mon-fri You can book a tour for $5 which includes a $2 coupon and tastings. http://www.junglejims.com/foodmarket/attractions/tours.asp
attractions include: the Big Cheese, the Band on a Boat, Olive Pit, Reserve Wine Cellar, Singing Elvis Lion, Candy Land, Live Fish Harvest, the Hot Sauce Fire Truck, Robin Hood of Sherwood Forest
One warning - you aren't allowed to take photos in the store.
Make sure you head for the world of food part of the store, not the regular grocery store part.

I definitely second giving yourself enough time. The first couple times I visited, I never did. It really is huge.
Hungrywoolf - great point about the regular grocery store. The first time I went we pulled in the front and got a parking spot so we didn't really see how large the store was. We walked around and thought it was completely overrated (besides the beer and wine sections and the world famous restroom...) We eventually figured it out...

Better yet, bring a map of the store when you go.
Seriously.

yes, do make sure you have plenty of time to soak in all in.
i think i spent about an hour just in the hot sauce aisle, looking at them all.a map is essential.
they usually have lots of things to taste, so you can actually get fed while looking around. they also have a small restaurant area near the liquor store but its mostly uninspiring. you can have a sandwich made to order at the deli if you want though. and a very good sushi bar.
if you have any friends/co-workers that are from another part of the world, ask them if you can bring anything specific back for them if you see it.
found some cool candy for a friend from Costa Rica there last time.hitting Ikea is also pretty convenient. only about 15-20min from each other.

Thanks for all the input, guys! How do their prices compare to other stores?
The cooler is in the trunk already so that I won't forget it----and comfortable shoes! I guess I'm ready for an adventure ;)

cheese. and cheese.

Agree on the usefulness of a map if you've never been there. And, yes, take your time.
Prices are pretty decent for imported goods, I think. I specifically remember that the Ritter chocolate I bought was about the same price as it is at Target (but they had flavors that Target doesn't carry).
Have fun and report back on what you found!

Checked out Jungle Jims for the first time on Sunday. It was awesome. I think we spent three hours there and still didn't get it all in.
I think my favorites were the wine and the Asian and Mexican sections. Oh, and the cheese...THE CHEESE.
Very cool store, will return!
