Dear John Petric;
Ouch. That lastarticle in the TOP about the ComFest hit some nerves. There were some misses, but it put some hits on the battleship.
On a deeper read of the article, it seemed to be trying to justify the hatred of the ComFest. I don't mean the bit about the friend with multiple sclerosis, that might have been infuriating, but it had little to do with the fest. Assholes have no special place in the city, you meet them anywhere, unfortunately.
I'm talking about the collective feeling you mentioned:
“In the old days, when Comfest was one main stage, you’d have hundreds of people clued in and united by the performance of the band. That was community, that was uniting, that was the point. Not to get fucked up and stuck in your gang but to morph into the wonderful collective feeling of the group.â€Â
I hear you. It seems like that is missing. But was that really the way it used to be? Or was that a memory enhanced by the passage of time. Is there any way to go back there?
The stuff about Altamount and the stabbing – did that have anything to do with the events at ComFest? And the “insane manifesto they print every year in the programâ€Â, honestly, you think it is insane?
I have some other questions I'd like to discuss, right here on Columbus Underground. Why don't you sign up an account, and have a debate/discussion about the ComFest. Just you and me, mano-a-mano.
Here are my bona fides – long time ComFest committee member, since 1983. Head of a committee for years, I was the lead organizer in 1996. I have stepped away from the committee for personal reasons for the last few years, but I stay in touch. I'm one of the old hippies that fits the role of what you call the “self-mythologizing obnoxious higher-upsâ€Â.
Here are some simple ground rules -
1. Just you and me. No comments from the peanut gallery.
2. No time limit for replies. I don't visit this board more than once a day, so a few days between responses is fine. No pressure, I have a life and job, as you do.
3. No ad hominem attacks. I don't know what you do outside of your writing for TOP, and don't care. I expect you don't care what my real name is, GW_Justice is the person you are talking to.
How about it? As my hippy brethren say, let's have a rap session, man.
*As prearranged with Walker, this thread is to be used by only Petric and me. Please look for another thread on this board if anyone else needs to comment.
