Just now getting lazy? ;) I thought it's always been a common practice to jump on trends and bandwagons whenever a genre or style is selling tickets. The first film defines the genre, the rest follow suit.
Since John Carter is a Disney film, I also get the vibe that they're trying to recreate the success they've had with Pirates of the Caribbean. Ah well. It is what it is, I guess.
Be sure to see it in 3-D for only $14.99!
Looks pretty, but also looks like a Star Wars/Avatar meshing. And since when did Mars become habitable?

Yeah. Doesn't look like they're going to explore any themes of the original work, but instead just slap shit together to see what sticks.
Which is deeply disappointing, as the Barsoom/John Carter books were some of my favorite reads during my misspent youth.
BTW: They're all public domain now and available for download in a number of formats here: http://www.feedbooks.com/search?query=barsoom

MOVIES HATE YOU TOO
2012 marks the 100th anniversary of the first literary appearance of the John Carter character in Edgar Rice Burrow’s Under the Moons of Mars. A film adaptation of the John Carter series is long overdue especially when you take into account that it has been in ‘development hell’ longer than any other film since the dawn of the moving picture. Within twenty years of first being published an animated film based on the adventures of John Carter was being developed by Looney Tunes animator, writer, and director Bob Clampett but never got off the ground. In more recent years the rights have bounced between studios and numerous directors such as John McTiernan, Robert Rodriguez, Kerry Conran, and Jon Favreau but the job eventually went to Pixar native Andrew Stanton. It took a century for John Carter to leap from the page to the screen, now the question is was it worth the wait?
