Autism is my career so I follow the news and research as closely as I can.
As far as vaccines go, correlation does not equal causation. In fact, the authors of the original study linking vaccines to Autism have retracted their statements. I'm certainly not opposed to a modified schedule. As far as I know, the only reason to give so many vaccines at once is to make it easier on parents and ensure that kids get all they need. The idea is that the fewer visits needed the more likely parents will be to make it to all of them. I know many people who have worked out a different schedule with their pediatricians though. Over the years, vaccines have become safer and safer. The vaccines we received as children were far more dangerous than the ones kids are receiving today. That doesn't add up with the increase in diagnosis if vaccines are the cause or trigger in my opinion.
As far as the GFCF diet and other bio-medical treatments, there just isn't any research to support them. I have seen a child that seemed to respond favorably to the GFCF diet, but there is no way to prove that it was the reason for positive changes. I have seen countless children that showed no changes at all. It is extremely difficult for me to believe that Autism could be cured by a diet or any other bio-medical intervention. OSU is involved in research on some bio-medical interventions. I think that in the future we may be able to use this research to help alleviate some symptoms of Autism in some of the people affected. Unfortunately right now, bio-medical is a trial and error business. Some of it is harmless and some of it is life-threatening.
I've rambled on long enough. If anyone is interested in reading research on these subjects, I'd more than happy to help track articles down for you. As you can see from the long post, I'm also willing to discuss anytime.
