so, Mr. Waitress' teenage brother has been living with us for a month, and today while walking home from work, he received a $120 jaywalking ticket for crossing Indianola.

I will spare my commentary on the great job Cbus' finest are doing and ask for the same "but jaywalkers are dangerous" lecture in return.

Is this one of those things where he can go to court and if his officer doesn't show up he won't have to pay? The ticket looks like he is required to appear in court, but if I remember, that's how speeding tickets look, too. (i haven't received one in years, knock on wood).

has anyone else received a jaywalking ticket?

3 years ago I got one for crossing high in the short north. By a bike cop.

That ticket didn't see the light of day for very long.

You're right, he can pay the ticket or contest it. See if the numbers on his citation match the Columbus City Code below. If so, crosswalk distance is an affirmative defense.

2171.05 - Walking on path or street, jaywalking.
(d) No pedestrian shall cross a roadway at a place other than a crosswalk except in cases where crosswalks are an unreasonable distance apart.

He can either go to court or just mail the payment in I believe. Like with traffic tickets that could just be paid through the mail when you go to court and try to work the cost down or try to fight it you will also have an added amount for court costs. That's been the norm for me when I fight tickets.
That is a pretty high ticket I had not realized it was that much ouch/
If I were him I would fight it I bet he could have it tossed out.

I recently fought a traffic ticket (unsafe lane change). The officer did not show. The judge would not dismiss the ticket, said that he would bring the officer in (and basically waste the rest of my day). The judge lowered the ticket to a muffler violation (???) and then said that I would not have to pay court costs. Evidently you may have to pay court costs if you fight a ticket.

This was for an $80 ticket which was reduced to a $50 one. For this I needed to go downtown twice (initial hearing, and then court), pay for parking and take off work.

Next time I will just pay the ticket.

I think it may be 150 feet from a marked crosswalk.

There is no "marked crossing" on Indianola between 7th and 15th Aves. 16th and Lane Aves. Lane to Tomkins Aves. Tompkins Ave to Hudson St. Hudson St to Arcadia Ave. Arcadia Ave to Weber Rd. Weber Rd to E. North Broadway. Most if not all of these stretches are over 150 feet.

This type of nonsense continues to perpetuate the image of Columbus as a cowtown. Come on! Let's address the real problems facing the future of Columbus; jaywalking not being one of them.

That is an outrageous amount for a ticket. It makes me lose respect for this city. I see people J-Walking downtown all the time. I see cars making illegal turns at Broad and High all the time. I don't see cops handing out tickets there.

This seems to be a Columbus tradition. In, oh, 1997, my band traveled here to play the More Than Music Festival. It was at the Newport that year and there were hundreds of emaciated, slightly dirty kids with Nikki Sixx style hair hanging around that block of High for hours on end. Needless to say, people were jaywalking all weekend. Police started issuing jaywalking tickets at random; I was the lucky recipient of one (never paid). Eventually, all the kids started jaywalking en masse, crossing the street back and forth just to fuck with the cops (Justin Pearson from The Locust may have initiated this). Nothing much came of it aside from a few tickets thrown in the trash and some mild confrontations with the police. I remember the ticket being far less than $120 though. Maybe it was $10 or $20 or something like that.

The definition of jaywalking in Chicago is different. It's only jaywalking if you cross mid-block and there's signals on both of the adjacent streets.

Not a good idea - it causes them to think you are hiding from warrants. Expect a free trip downtown.

ha! That was a fun day, although you're forgetting the police helicopter and reinforcements that showed up to address the jaywalking.
