In all fairness, you should disclose the fact that city workers have excellent health insurance paid over 90% by the city which is approximately an annual benefit of $6000 (individual coverage) and $14,000 (family coverage); a generous retirement plan paid 100% by the city (24% of pay for general city employees, 34% of pay for firefighters and 29.5% of pay for police officers) that is guaranteed by the taxpayers regardless of economic conditions, provides a lifetime annual 3% cost-of-living allowance, and allows workers to retire at any age with 30 years of service or in the case of safety forces at age 48 with 25 years of service. They also have generous vacation and sick leave policies, exclusive of at least 10 days of paid holidays such as MLK day, President's day, Columbus day and Veterans' day. These are all extremely valuable benefits in terms of dollars, especially retirement and health care benefits these days, that should not be ignored in making comparisons between the public and private sectors.
